p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff ensure that children’s key-work sessions are focused on identifying areas of need and risk. Children are helped to improve their behaviour and to have the chance to discuss their worries. Children are also supported to contribute their thoughts and ideas to children’s meetings. These include ideas for trying new activities and about meal choices. This means that children feel that they are valued members of the household.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The children’s placement plans are not designed in a child-friendly way which considers a child’s age and understanding. This does not therefore ensure that children are provided with sufficient opportunities to be involved in decisions that affect them.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children enjoy positive relationships with staff. Staff are patient, caring and understanding of children’s individual behaviours. As a result, children experience positive and healthy relationships with staff.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff are good at helping children to address any issues that arise in school. This approach supports children to overcome barriers to their learning so that academic success can be achieved.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children enjoy a good range of activities to help them to develop their hobbies. For example, children make the most of their local community and often visit local farms and attend community events. Children are actively encouraged and supported to try new things.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff help children to see their families. This support is helping to strengthen relationships with family members.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Children are safe at the home. Children do not go missing from the home and they are not at risk of child sexual exploitation or radicalisation.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Safe recruitment practice ensures that anyone employed in the home is safe to work with children.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff use bedroom door alarms to provide additional security to the home. However, current risk assessments surrounding this practice are not reviewed in order to consider children’s individual needs.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Managers review the suitability of the location of the home. This provides staff with clear information to support them in protecting the children from harm in the community.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The home has received one complaint since the last inspection. This complaint was not appropriately recorded, for example by noting the details of the action taken. This does Inspection report children’s home: SC476261 5 not provide complainants with a satisfactory outcome or enable the managers to monitor and learn from complaints.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff are trained in fire safety procedures and ensure that children take part in fire evacuation drills, so they understand what to do in the event of a fire or other emergencies.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The new manager and her team have worked hard to make the necessary improvements since the last inspection. The recent stability of the team has increased staff morale and desire to improve outcomes for children. Staff feel supported by the manager.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Staff have good-quality supervision, which focuses on the needs of children. This means that there are opportunities to reflect and learn from staff members’ current practice.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Although staff have completed a variety of training, the current system for reviewing training does not provide accurate up-to-date data. This hinders the manager in reviewing staff training needs effectively.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager has not ensured that all staff are qualified to level 3 in residential childcare within the required period. Without this qualification, staff cannot show that they have had the opportunity to develop the skills required for working with children in residential childcare.

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.

p.5
