Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

The provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

n The childminder does not have a comprehensive knowledge of the learning and development requirements, to support children to make the best possible progress in their learning. n The childminder does not provide a wide range of resources suitable for children's age and capabilities. Children have limited resources and equipment accessible for them to explore, to fully support their learning. n The childminder has a limited understanding of how to plan and provide purposeful play experiences, based on children's learning needs, to raise the outcomes in children's learning. n The childminder has not fully developed partnerships with children's parents to gain a better understanding of children's needs and interests. n The childminder does not use self-evaluation effectively to reflect on the quality of her provision and to target areas for development accurately.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The childminder builds strong bonds with children. She is attentive and caring towards their needs. Children are happy and well settled in the childminder's care. n The childminder recognises her responsibility to keep children safe. She follows robust methods to ensure that her home is safe and suitable. n The childminder has a suitable understanding of how to support children to manage their feelings and behaviour appropriately.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and children. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder during the inspection. n The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including the childminder's policies and procedures and children's records. n The inspector had a tour of the childminder's home.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

Self-evaluation is not used effectively to improve the quality of the provision. The childminder is aware that she has some areas to develop. For instance, she recognises weaknesses in her understanding of the learning and development requirements. However, she has not targeted training or support to help her improve. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a suitable knowledge of child protection issues. She has a clear understanding of the procedures that she should follow to report any concerns that she has about a child's welfare. The childminder places children's safety as her priority. She follows secure procedures to ensure that children do not come into contact with adults who are not suitable. The childminder does not work effectively in partnerships with parents to gather precise information about children's learning and care needs, on entry to the setting.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder does not have a secure understanding of how to support children's learning in all areas. For instance, she does not fully consider how she will support children to meet the next stage of their learning, and resources and books are not accessible for children to explore independently. The childminder is responsive to children and meets their care needs appropriately. For example, she recognises when the very young children need comfort and rest. The childminder supports children's communication, language and physical skills. They babble to her as she talks and sings with them, and children giggle and kick their legs as they play tickling games together.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder understands the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles. For example, she regularly takes young children on walks along the seafront to have fresh air. The childminder is positive and happy, and children respond well to her manner. She acts as a positive role model and raises children's confidence and self-esteem. For instance, she cheers and praises babies when they communicate with her. The childminder supports children to gain an awareness of people from backgrounds different to their own. For example, she takes children out on walks in the local community. Weaknesses in the organisation of the environment mean that children do not have sufficient opportunities to explore. They cannot make their own choices about what they would like to play with.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children develop some skills that support them for the next stage of their learning. For instance, they are confident and emotionally secure. Weaknesses in the learning environment, assessment and planning mean that children do not have the appropriate levels of challenge to support them to make overall good progress in their learning.
