The provision is good

n The childminder provides a calm, welcoming environment, which helps children to settle quickly. She offers frequent praise and encouragement, which supports them to persevere with tasks. The childminder is sensitive to children's needs and responds promptly when they require individual attention. n Children make good progress in their learning. The childminder monitors their progress accurately and uses her observations to plan activities based on their individual interests and next steps. n The childminder includes parents in making initial assessments of children's learning and keeps them fully informed of their progress. Parents speak positively about the detailed information they receive in the daily diary. Parents regularly share information about their children's learning and the childminder provides ideas and activities to develop this further at home. n The childminder uses her garden well to provide a range of activities to develop

children's learning. For example, they have opportunities to practise their physical skills as they dig and climb. They explore musical instruments and engage in water play.

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching, evaluated an activity with the childminder and discussed the impact on children's learning. n The inspector interacted with children at various points during the inspection. n The inspector examined a sample of relevant documents and evidence of suitability of people living in the household. n The inspector discussed children's learning and their progress with the childminder, including their next steps and children's interests. n The inspector had a tour of the childminder's home. She looked at the range of resources available for children's use.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder can clearly identify possible signs of abuse and is aware of the procedures to follow if concerned. She regularly updates her training on the wider aspects of safeguarding, which further helps her to keep children safe. The childminder reflects on her practice and actively seeks further training to broaden her skills and knowledge, which has a positive impact on children. For example, training on speech and communication has given her a better understanding of how to support children's language skills.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children clearly enjoy their time at the childminder's home. They are confident and keen to explore the good range of resources offered. The childminder immerses herself in children's play and uses it as an opportunity to help children to acquire new vocabulary. For example, when pretending to be doctors, she discusses the names of parts of the body, such as heart, lungs and ribs. The childminder uses books well to develop children's learning. For example, younger children enjoy feeling different textures. Older children develop their mathematical skills as they count pirates and giggle as they try to work out which pirate is missing from the next page. The childminder takes children on regular visits to facilities in the local community, such as the library and play areas, which help them to gain an understanding of the wider world.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a positive role model and has clear expectations, which she reinforces during play. For example, she reminds children to share and praises them when they say 'please' and 'thank you'. The childminder helps children to gain an understanding of developing a healthy lifestyle. They have daily access to fresh air and exercise. Children wash their hands before eating and are given healthy food choices. They develop good independence as they tidy away resources and butter their own crumpets at snack time. The childminder teaches children about respecting differences and to understand the wider world. For example, she plans activities to explore festivals, such as Chinese New Year.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points and develop the skills that they will need for their future learning, including school. They have opportunities to develop early mathematical and literacy skills. For example, children enjoy activities to practise counting and enthusiastically sing rhymes. Older children manage their own personal hygiene needs with little adult support and practise their writing skills.
