p.1

The provision is good

n The childminder assesses children's good progress precisely and identifies their next steps for learning. She plans exciting and challenging activities, and young children achieve well. n The childminder provides a good range of toys and resources to support children's all- round learning and development. n Children learn to live healthily. For example, they enjoy fruit and vegetables, which they grow in the garden, and follow good hygiene and hand-washing routines. n The childminder works very effectively in partnership with parents and other professionals. Their shared approach further complements children's learning at home and in the childminder's setting. n The motivated childminder reflects on her practice and continually develops her professional skills. For example, she attends training, works with the local authority advisor and uses other forms of media to further benefit the children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The childminder does not plan outdoor activities precisely enough for those children who prefer to learn outdoors. n Occasionally, the childminder does not make the most of opportunities to fully extend children's understanding that print carries meaning during their play.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of child protection and promoting children's safety. She knows the correct procedures to follow should she have a concern about a child's welfare. The childminder helps children to learn about keeping safe and minimises possible safety risks. For example, children learn how to cross the road safely. The childminder closely tracks children's progress to ensure that any gaps are identified and acted upon. Parents are very pleased with the good progress their children make and the care they receive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the learning and development requirements. She uses effective teaching skills. For example, she chats to children about what they are doing, makes suggestions and adds extra resources to help extend their play. During the inspection, children make dough. They strengthen the muscles in their hands as they squeeze the dough and they use their sense of smell as they add different spices. They enjoy making marks in the flour with their hands and feet. The childminder encourages children to use their imaginations and find out how things work. For example, they use the stethoscope to hear their baby doll's heartbeat.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has close relationships with the children. She teaches children right from wrong, to be kind to others and take turns. The childminder gives plenty of praise and encouragement to boost children's confidence. Children make good progress in their physical development. For example, they join in action songs, steer and ride toys, and climb in the woods. The childminder teaches children about other people's beliefs by, for example, learning about the festival of Holi.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are eager learners. They make good progress from their different starting points. Children develop good independence skills as they feed themselves, select toys and help tidy away. They have a good understanding of mathematics. For example, they confidently count and identify numbers and colours. Children quickly gain the skills they need for the next stage in their learning and for school.
