The provision is good

n The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn. She plans interesting activities and provides a very wide range of toys and resources, to help children make good progress in all areas of learning. n The childminder has addressed the recommendations from her last inspection to benefit further children's interest in reading and awareness of diversity in society. n The childminder is a good role model. She effectively builds children's self-esteem. For example, she gives them praise and encouragement for good behaviour and individual efforts. n The childminder establishes trusting relationships with parents and other childminding colleagues, to meet the ongoing care and learning needs of the children successfully. Parents' highly compliment the childminder for the progress their children make in her care.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The childminder does not make the most of opportunities to help parents to extend children's learning at home, to develop a more shared approach to their learning. n Sometimes, the childminder does not allow children enough time to respond to questions or solve problems, to extend their learning further.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has good knowledge of the Local Safeguarding Children Board procedures. She knows how to take swift action to protect children's welfare in the event of a child protection concern. The childminder completes daily risk assessments on the premises, garden and outings. She minimises possible hazards and teaches children about personal safety during routines and outings. For example, children recall putting their seat belts on in the car. The childminder reflects on her practice and parents receive regular feedback and opportunities to express their views about their children's progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The enthusiastic childminder provides children with exciting activities that motivate them to learn. She provides a welcoming environment and she encourages children to explore and investigate. For example, she helps children to develop good mathematical skills as they explore colours, sizes, shapes and measurements. The childminder carefully assesses and tracks children's progress to help her to identify and address any gaps in their learning quickly. Children learn through using their senses. For example, they explore a variety of natural materials, including potpourri. Children use their imaginations well and they are creative. For example, they enjoy role play in the vets and learn how things work as they operate cash tills and medical tools.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy and settled in the childminder's care. They have close relationships with the childminder and seek her out for reassurance and cuddles, such as when they hear unfamiliar sounds in the garden. Older children show kindness towards younger children, and they learn to share and take turns. The childminder provides a very wide range of activities, toys and resources. This captures the children's interests, indoors and outdoors. Children develop good physical skills, for example, they balance and walk along stepping stones. They learn about the world around them. For example, they plant herbs and observe the animals at the farm, and learn about their own and other people's beliefs.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their different starting points. They develop good independence skills, for example, they pour drinks and take off their shoes by themselves. Children develop good literacy skills. They hold a pencil to draw pictures with details, such as facial features. They begin to identify their name and listen attentively to stories. Children are prepared well for the next stages in their learning or eventual move to school.
