The provision is good

n Children develop good social skills. They behave very well, use good manners and involve others in their play. Children demonstrate helpful behaviour and the childminder uses praise well, to reinforce their understanding. n The childminder observes children regularly and assesses their overall progress successfully. She uses this information to plan age-appropriate and interesting learning experiences to help children move on to their next steps in learning and development. n The childminder provides a warm and welcoming environment for the children who attend. As a result, children are happy and settle well in her care. n The childminder effectively reflects on her childcare practice which enables her to identify and address areas for further development. She values the views of parents and children, and uses their feedback when considering any changes.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n Occasionally, the childminder does not give children the time they need to think for themselves and share their answers and ideas fully. n The childminder does not consistently make full use of all opportunities to extend children's understanding and awareness of mathematical concepts, such as shape, space and measurement.

She looked at a selection of relevant documentation. n The inspector spoke to children during the session. n The inspector and the childminder jointly observed and evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder demonstrates a clear knowledge and understanding of how to identify and report any safeguarding concerns. She attends training on a range of safeguarding related topics, further supporting her in her role. Risk assessments are carried out effectively and children are well supervised at all times. The childminder helps children to learn how to keep themselves safe. For example, she teaches children what they should do in the event they should need to leave the home in an emergency. The childminder evaluates what she learns from the training she attends. She uses this information effectively to promote and enhance learning outcomes for children further. The childminder forms good partnerships with parents. Parents comment very positively. For example, they state that she provides a real home-from-home experience for children in a secure and positive environment.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children well. She monitors children's progress effectively and is able to identify clearly any gaps in their learning. Children thoroughly enjoy playing outdoors. They have opportunities to use wheeled toys, make dens and listen to stories. The childminder provides a wide range of resources to support children's imagination and creativity. For instance, children use paintbrushes, twigs and cones as they experiment making marks using paint and sand. The childminder follows children's ideas and plays alongside them. She gives good commentary to their play which helps to foster their communication and language skills effectively.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are encouraged to be independent. For example, they learn how to put their own shoes on ready to go outside to play. The childminder gathers all necessary information from parents when children first attend her setting and updates this on an ongoing basis. This helps her to meet children's individual needs and know what their current interests are, so that she can effectively plan activities which she knows they will enjoy.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress and are developing the key skills they require for future learning and for moving on to school. They are confident and motivated to learn. Children learn to be understanding and celebrate difference. They enjoy activities that promote their awareness of their local community as well as the wider world. Children really enjoy helping to retell their favourite stories using books they know well. They learn how to hold books correctly and join in with rhymes and key phrases.
