They visit local libraries, parks and woods as part of their daily routine.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n Although the childminder has regular discussions with parents, she does not keep them fully informed of how she is supporting their child's learning and how she assesses their development. n The childminder maintains thorough accident records. However, these are not consistently kept in a way that ensures confidentiality.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector reviewed a range of documentation, including children's progress records and a selection of written policies and procedures. n The inspector looked at areas of the home that are used for childminding. n The inspector spoke to the childminder and the children at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day of inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is confident of actions to take to protect minded children. This includes where to report any concerns and how to identify children who may be at risk of extreme views. The childminder maintains close working relationships with local pre-schools. They share significant information about the children's development and the childminder has been able to access in-house safeguarding training at the pre-school. Children benefit from this consistency in their care and learning. The childminder reflects well on her own practice and has identified aspects of her provision she would like to develop. Parents speak highly of the childminder and how well she cares for their children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder gathers a range of information from parents when their child starts. This includes information about their care and parents' views about their child's stage of development. The childminder uses this well to identify how she can support children's learning and development. She regularly reviews her observations to make accurate assessments of children's progress. The childminder promotes children's learning effectively as they play. She counts the bricks as they build a small tower and names familiar objects in picture books when they read them together. The childminder actively encourages children's developing communication skills. She provides lots of praise when children roar like the lion in the picture or when they attempt to say the name of their favourite character.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children form very close relationships with the childminder. They feel secure and settle quickly on arrival. Children are learning how to be kind and polite to others. The childminder reminds them to be gentle to the cat and she models good manners, such as saying 'please' and 'thank you'. The childminder encourages the children to be independent and praises toddlers when they hold their own cup to drink. She makes sure they are able to make choices about with what they would like to play. Children benefit from fresh air and exercise. The garden provides opportunities for them to run around and play on wheeled toys.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are all making good progress and are meeting their expected levels of development. They are learning skills to prepare them for their next stage of learning. Younger children are beginning to understand simple mathematics while they play. They enjoy looking at books and are developing their communication skills well.
