p.1

The provision is good

n Children form strong emotional bonds with the kind and caring childminder. They behave well and are polite to others. n The childminder gets to know children well. She competently identifies any emerging gaps in children's learning. The childminder provides activities and resources that help narrow these gaps, particularly for those children who are learning English as an additional language. She helps all children make good progress from their starting points. n The childminder works closely with parents to meet children's learning and welfare needs successfully. She keeps parents well informed about a child's day and parents share what they know about children's achievements at home. n The childminder has made significant improvements to the setting since the previous inspection. For example, children now have more exciting and challenging outdoor play equipment to explore in the garden. They develop strong physical skills and good

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder keeps her knowledge of safeguarding procedures up to date. She has a good understanding of what to do if she has a child protection concern. The childminder maintains a safe and secure environment where children play freely and safely. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and co-childminder share the responsibility for maintaining the required records. The childminder has recently enhanced opportunities for children who prefer to play and learn outdoors. For example, she has installed artificial grass in the area of the garden used for minding so children can play outside in all weathers.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder and co-childminder both observe children and share what they know about a child. They work effectively together to establish what learning they need to focus on for each child to progress further. The childminder interacts skilfully with children and builds on their learning. For example, she explains about shadows to children when looking at a book together. The childminder helps children become confident speakers. For instance, she encourages children to copy words she says and extends their speaking skills. The childminder reinforces letter sounds well when, for example, children play with an alphabet toy. She extends children's imagination by, for instance, asking children questions about what they are pretending to cook.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder helps children develop a good understanding of healthy lifestyles. For example, she successfully teaches children about healthy eating and how to wash their hands correctly. Children increase their good awareness of how to stay safe. For example, the childminder encourages them to look and decide when a road is safe to cross. Children form good relationships with adults. They show care and concern for others.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop well in the skills they need to be ready for school. They have good social skills and manage their personal care needs well. Children are active learners who engage in play with a purpose. They are curious and concentrate well at activities. Children are independent and confidently make their own decisions. For example, children said, 'I need something else', and went to find the toy they needed to develop their play. Children show they have a love of stories and books. For instance, they cuddle up with the childminder to look at favourite picture books and talk about what they can see.
