Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder takes advantage of training and guidance to make sure her knowledge of child protection and first aid is secure and current. She has robust record-keeping procedures to support children's safety and well-being. She ensures that children play in a safe and secure environment. She helps children to consider the risks they meet in their play and learning. The childminder establishes good relationships with parents, and provides useful and regular information to support children's good achievement. She works well with other settings that children attend, to ensure smooth transition.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder accurately assesses children's progress, for example, through regular and detailed observations of their play and learning. She encourages parents to provide useful information on children's interests and routines when they first start. She makes good use of the information shared with parents to plan children's further development. The childminder helps children to develop their vocabulary and early mathematical skills well. For example, she asks them to 'pass the circle' when they are moulding shapes with play dough and to tell her which shape they would like next. She makes useful links between activities. She encourages children to develop their problem-solving skills through play with construction toys or small-world garages and rolling toys.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder works well with parents to help their children to develop good health and hygiene routines. She encourages healthy eating habits by providing nutritious and well-balanced snacks and meals. She promotes regular physical activity through games in the well-equipped garden or walks to local parks and other places of interest. The childminder sets a positive example for children to follow with her calm, friendly manner and gentle sense of humour. Children enjoy their time with the childminder. They learn to be polite and thoughtful towards others. They learn to consider the needs of others. For example, older children recognise when young ones need help in the game they are playing and offer to assist. The childminder establishes very clear expectations for behaviour, which contribute to their tolerance and kindness to others.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

The childminder regularly reviews all children's progress to identify and address any gaps in their learning. All children progress well from their starting point to reach at least the levels typical for their age. Children learn to appreciate a wide range of children's stories, and form and recognise letters in their names successfully. Children develop their knowledge of shapes and numbers well. They identify circles, squares and triangles in their own artwork, for example.
