p.1
Information about this children’s home
This home is operated by a private company. It is registered to provide care and accommodation for up to two children who have social and/or emotional difficulties.
p.1
Information about this children’s home
There has been no registered manager in place since 8 June 2018.
p.1
This monitoring visit
This visit was carried out following the children‟s home being judged inadequate at the full inspection on 13 June 2018. One compliance notice and a notice restricting accommodation were issued. Nine requirements were set. This visit was to assess the progress in meeting the compliance notice and to ensure that the restriction of accommodation notice was being adhered to. The provider‟s response to the requirements set was not considered as part of this inspection, and these have been repeated with extended dates for completion.
p.1
This monitoring visit
A compliance notice was issued under regulation 13 (2)(c) in relation to ensuring that staff have the experience, qualifications and skill to meet the needs of the child in the home.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The steps required were to ensure that the staff working at the home receive training from a suitably qualified instructor in supporting and caring for children who demonstrate self-harming behaviours and those diagnosed with allergies who may require the use of an epi-pen. Further, to ensure that a sufficient number of staff receive first aid training that leads to an appropriate qualification.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Training took place on 21 June 2018 to provide staff with the necessary knowledge and expertise to respond effectively to self-harm behaviour. Three out of six staff were able to attend and a fourth completed an online course. Training for the remaining staff has been scheduled for 23 July 2018. The training was delivered by an experienced psychotherapist and child and adolescent mental health practitioner. Inspection report for children‟s home - monitoring visit: 1256913 2 Staff interviewed, including the person who completed the online training, displayed good knowledge and understanding of the subject and said they felt confident about using the learning in practice. The staff rota shows at least one person who has completed this training working on every shift.
p.1
This monitoring visit
First aid training sessions were arranged and took place between 19 and 28 June 2018. All staff, except one on extended sickness leave, attended. The credentials of the trainer show that he is competent to teach adults and that he is qualified to instruct first aid at a level suitable for persons working in children‟s residential care. The training was completed over one day and included practical exercises and theory. There was both formal and informal testing of candidates‟ learning at the end of each stage of the programme. The three staff interviewed during the inspection all spoke highly of the trainer and training and were able to provide examples of what they had learned. The training was geared to addressing likely scenarios requiring first aid in children‟s home settings.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Response to allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, was specifically covered in the first aid training. The three staff interviewed were able to describe the circumstances in which they would need to use an epi-pen and how they would do this. All appeared confident to use this procedure.
