Outcomes for children Requires improvement
p.1
The provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
n Children are not supported in making as much progress as possible. The childminder does not make the most of information from assessment well enough to understand children's levels of achievement. Planning is not sufficiently focused to ensure that younger children are suitably challenged. n The childminder does not always follow the most appropriate hygiene procedures during nappy changing time. She does not make the best use of all opportunities to promote children's growing independence. n The childminder does not reflect on the quality of the provision effectively enough to identify where improvements can be made to promote children's learning fully.
p.1
It has the following strengths
n The childminder has developed effective partnerships with parents and regularly exchanges information with them about children's needs. n The childminder provides children with opportunities that help them to learn about communities beyond their immediate experience. Children play with toys that reflect people from different cultures and learn about various celebrations. n Children enjoy being physically active, such as climbing up steps to a slide and finding different ways to travel down safely. n The childminder is friendly and kind. Children form close attachments with her and enjoy being in her care.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register the provider must: Due date improve the use of observation and assessment of children's progress and develop teaching skills further to plan challenging learning opportunities that are more precisely matched to children's individual stages of development and help all children make consistently good progress. 09/02/2019
p.2
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
What the setting needs to do to improve further
n increase opportunities for children to gain confidence in their own abilities and learn to manage everyday tasks for themselves n improve arrangements to support the good health and hygiene needs of all children attending the setting n make effective use of self-evaluation, including the views of parents and children to reflect accurately on the quality of teaching and learning, and improve outcomes for children.
p.2
What the setting needs to do to improve further
Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection and carried out a joint evaluation of the teaching and learning with the childminder. n The inspector viewed the areas of the childminder's home used by children. n The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as policies and children's records. n The inspector took account of parents' views.
p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of how to keep children safe and understands the procedures to follow if she has any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder makes careful risk assessments for places they visit. However, she does not follow good hygiene procedures when managing children's toileting needs. The childminder has made some improvements since the last inspection. For example, she now maintains accurate registers of children's attendance. She seeks some opportunities to support her teaching skills. For example, she has completed training to help her to recognise how to support children in managing their feelings and behaviour. However, she does not reflect accurately on the service she provides to identify and address all the weaknesses in practice.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The quality of teaching is variable. The childminder provides activities that engage older children effectively. However, she does not target teaching as well as possible to ensure that all activities offer younger children suitable challenge. The childminder makes regular observations of children's achievements. However, she does not use information gained from observations and assessments to plan individual learning experiences successfully for children. This means that she does not focus activities consistently enough on what children need to learn next to help them make the progress of which they are capable. The childminder provides children with effective support for their communication and language development. Children listen and repeat familiar words and phrases. She provides them with opportunities to support their early writing skills. Children enjoy painting activities.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Children enjoy the freedom to move regularly between indoor rooms and the outdoor space. However, the childminder does not place the highest regard on promoting children's good health and well-being. She does not use a changing mat during nappy changing times. Children do not have enough opportunities to develop their independence and to attend to their personal needs. The childminder manages children's behaviour effectively. Children learn to share and take turns well. They respond positively to the praise they receive, which supports their self-esteem successfully.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Due to the weaknesses in teaching and assessment, the childminder does not fully support children to make the progress they should. Despite this, older children sustain their concentration on activities that interest them, such as gluing sequins onto bottles. Children gain basic skills to support their future learning. They benefit from opportunities to use their imaginations and to be creative. This includes role-play activities, such as cooking and exploring sounds with saucepans and spoons. Children enjoy playing in the sand and filling containers.
