The quality of the relationships between the young person and staff is exceptional. p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding
Feedback from professionals is extremely positive about the standard of care, the level of communication from the home, and the resulting positive outcomes for the young person. A social worker said, ‘Staff have been fantastic, they’ve done an amazing job. They have helped [young person’s name] so much. Because of the support and care he’s received, he has absolutely flourished. Staff really have helped him become the lovely young man he is today.’
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding
There is strong evidence that education is highly valued and promoted by staff. Consequently, the young person enjoys excellent attendance at school and has made sustained improvement in his educational attainment. Staff acknowledge and celebrate every academic success; this includes giving the young person rewards for doing well. As a result, the young person is proud of his achievements and has developed a positive Inspection report children’s home: SC456542 4 attitude towards his education.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding
Carefully planned and agreed arrangements are in place for the young person to visit his family or for his family members to visit him at the home. Staff have helped the young person to rebuild relationships and improve the quality of contact with the key people in his life.
p.4
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding
Staff are genuinely interested in what the young person has to say and take every opportunity to engage him in family-like discussions. The young person confirmed this and told the inspector that his opinions matter, he feels respected and knows that staff have his best interest at heart.
p.4
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding
The home is indistinguishable from others around it. It provides a warm, cosy and child- friendly environment. The overall state of repair, quality of decor, furnishings, fixtures and equipment is good. However, parts of the home are looking tired, with some wear and tear. The manager has acknowledged that some areas require attention and has taken some action to address this.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Care practice is underpinned by effective safeguarding procedures and a positive approach to influencing behavioural change. Staff have a parent-like approach, act as good role models and provide the right examples to enable the young person to keep himself safe and become more socially aware. This has been highly effective in eradicating risk-taking and challenging behaviour. The young person has become increasingly safe. Staff undertake key-work sessions with him on key issues such as criminal exploitation, stranger danger and sexual health. Staff do not lose sight of the need to balance the management of risk against the need to take age-appropriate risks. Because of this, the young person has a strong sense of personal safety.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff have a thorough understanding of the young person. This means that they are able to manage situations well. They understand the young person’s triggers and know what is effective in managing his behaviour. Positive behaviour is consistently promoted, and rewards are effective, with the young person achieving his rewards of choice, for example a visit to a theme park and watching his favourite football team.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Most risk assessments and behaviour management plans are informative and updated on a regular basis. Overall, staff demonstrate a good understanding of these documents and understand how to manage risk. That said, not all risk assessments contain sufficient detail. For example, the young person’s missing from home trigger plan does not provide sufficient guidance for staff. To date, there is no evidence that this has impacted adversely on the young person’s safety. However, this is not best practice and requires some revision.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The manager takes appropriate action to ensure that all significant events are notified in line with regulations. This ensures effective scrutiny of the incident and the action taken Inspection report children’s home: SC456542 5 to support the young person by the different agencies.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The young person benefits from living in a well-managed home. The registered manager is suitably experienced and is well supported by an effective deputy manager. Together, they provide effective leadership, with clear aims and objectives which place the young person’s needs at the heart of everything.
p.5
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff confirm that they feel well supported by the manager and their colleagues. They benefit from regular formal and informal supervision and appraisals take place annually.
p.5
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Training opportunities are good, and all staff are up to date with their core training. Further training is implemented in the light of the identified and emerging needs of the young person placed. This response enables staff to learn new skills and refresh existing ones, so that the ever-changing needs of the young person in their care remain fully addressed.
p.5
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff maintain highly effective partnerships with teachers, social workers and other professional agencies. This ensures that the young person benefits from the best possible help and all-round support.
p.5
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager regularly monitors the quality of care provided. He has a good understanding of activity within the home, staff performance and the young person’s progress. Monitoring reports are sufficiently detailed. These reports clearly analyse patterns and trends, evaluate how the young person is cared for and highlight areas for further improvement.
p.5
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Case records are organised and provide a good overall picture of the young person’s experiences at the home. However, the children’s guide requires some revision. In its current form, this document is cumbersome and not child-friendly.
p.5
