Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Since the last inspection, the registered manager and staff have continued to make improvements to the home. These improvements provide young people with a comfortable environment in which to live. There are many positive touches, including pictures, which reinforce a homely atmosphere.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff make every attempt to develop a good relationship with young people which is based on warmth and trust. Staff listen to young people and where possible will act on a young person‟s wishes. For example, one young person had asked to start going to swimming at the local leisure centre. The young person is now enjoying attending on a regular basis.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Young people are encouraged to engage in regular one-to-one key-worker sessions with staff. These conversations take place frequently and cover a variety of topics relevant to young people‟s needs. Consequently, young people are provided with the opportunity to improve their behaviour and have the chance to discuss personal matters that may be on their minds. Inspection report children‟s home: SC476267 4 When young people arrive at the home, they quickly begin to engage in education, either at school or at the home. Communication between school and staff is good.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff facilitate family contact. Staff will often support supervised contact to enable young people to spend more time with their family. This support has helped to strengthen relationships with family members.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The registered manager manages safeguarding concerns well. She closely monitors incidents and when required makes prompt referrals to partner agencies. Good partnership working with the in-house clinical team means that information sharing is everyday practice.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Young people are not currently at risk of child sexual exploitation or radicalisation. However, staff receive training on how to support the young people should this be the case.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
At the interim inspection visit in April 2018, one requirement was made. This concerned the lack of multi-agency input within the home‟s location risk assessment. The registered manager has worked closely with key partners to ensure that the location risk assessment has been updated. As a result, staff can consider any additional matters relating to risks within the community.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff have good links with the local police. The registered manager uses the opportunity to discuss issues such as exploitation hotspots and local crime.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Some young people‟s behaviour has been particularly challenging since the last inspection. On occasions when physical restraint is necessary to prevent serious harm, the records made by staff receive management oversight. However, the recordings do not always reflect that the young person has had the opportunity to talk about the physical restraint with someone who was not directly involved in the incident. This reduces the effectiveness of monitoring and review.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff ensure that all young people have care plans in place that hold important information about their care. However, one young person‟s care planning document is missing information from their placing authority. Despite the registered manager raising this with the local authority, she has not escalated the matter in the best interests of the young person.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Since the last inspection, there have been no incidents when young people have gone missing from the home or have been absent without agreement. However, all staff are knowledgeable about procedures to follow if this should happen.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Inspection report children‟s home: SC476267 5 The registered manager is committed to improving the service for the young people‟s benefit. The recent stability of the team has increased staff morale.
p.5
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff receive good-quality supervision which focuses on the needs of young people. This means that staff can reflect on practice.
p.5
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff receive regular training to enable them to meet the young people‟s individual day- to-day needs. There is a detailed training plan in place to enhance specialist training for staff.
p.5

Information about this inspection
Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children‟s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.
