p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The quality of teaching is variable within the nursery. At times, staff do not interact with the children successfully, to challenge and support their learning effectively. Children do not make the progress of which they are capable. Staff working with toddlers do not consistently provide opportunities for them to practise and develop their early speaking skills. The staff share some information about children's learning with other settings they attend. However, they do not do this in enough detail to enable consistency in children's experiences.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The manager is knowledgeable and highly committed to developing the nursery. She is working effectively with staff to help raise the quality of the provision. There are good partnerships with parents, and staff exchange information about children's learning and care needs. Parents are very complimentary of the nursery and particularly value the online learning system. Staff are caring and kind in their approach. Children have developed close relationships with staff. This helps children to feel safe and secure in the nursery and supports their emotional well-being.

strengthen partnership working with other settings that children attend, to exchange information regularly about children's learning and enable better consistency in their experiences.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector spoke with staff and children during the inspection. The inspector completed a joint observation with the nursery manager. The inspector held a meeting with the provider and nursery manager. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of staff working in the nursery. The inspector spoke to a number of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
Safeguarding is effective. Staff have a suitable understanding of child protection procedures and explain what they would do if they suspect a child is suffering from harm. They are aware of the signs and symptoms of harm and neglect. Staff supervise children well, further promoting their safety. The provider implements effective recruitment processes. This helps to ensure that all staff are suitable to work with children. Arrangements for professional development provide some support for staff. The manager monitors staff performance through working alongside staff and regular supervision meetings. The management team has a generally accurate overview of the effectiveness of the nursery. It demonstrates a positive desire to improve the overall quality of teaching and the achievements of all children. However, it is too early to demonstrate the impact this is having on improving outcomes for children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The quality of teaching is variable. Staff understand that children learn through play and they routinely observe children's development. However, not all staff give children enough support and challenge to extend their learning. This means that, at times, children do not show high levels of engagement or involvement. For example, staff join in with children's play and follow their interests, such as using objects with which to print. However, they do not extend children's learning or engage them for prolonged periods. Staff leave activities before children have finished playing and children quickly lose interest. Staff working with toddlers sit with them but do not actively engage them in conversation to help encourage their early communication skills. At other times the teaching is more effective. For example, outside, children thoroughly enjoy play in the mud kitchen. Staff join in enthusiastically and act as good role models as they pretend to make their own mud cakes
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Staff understand children's care needs and meet these well. Children receive a warm welcome at this friendly nursery and develop secure attachments to staff. Staff raise children's sense of self-esteem, for instance, by praising their good behaviour and achievements. They communicate well with each other to ensure children's safety. Children enjoy healthy snacks and meals, and wash their hands as part of the routine. These opportunities help children to learn about healthy lifestyles.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Weaknesses in the overall quality of teaching mean that children are not consistently supported to reach their full potential. Children are gaining the basic skills to help prepare them for the next stages of their learning, including their eventual move on to school. They enjoy listening to stories read by enthusiastic staff. Early writing skills are emerging. Children are developing their independence. Babies are supported to feed themselves and older children are encouraged to put on their own coats ready for play outdoors.
