Inspection activities
The inspector sampled documents, including children's learning records and the childminder's policies, procedures and risk assessments. The inspector spoke to parents and reviewed written feedback. The inspector undertook a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector observed children at play indoors and outdoors, and their interactions with the childminder.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is outstanding
The childminder is a highly reflective practitioner and she regularly evaluates her practice and provision to make improvements that contribute to continuous improvement. Children's views and preferences are considered when planning. For example, recent outings have used children's enthusiasm for buses to support their literacy and language skills, and their understanding of the world. Children made a story book of their bus journeys which they shared excitedly while using their new words. The clean, highly organised and well-resourced space encourages children to be very independent learners who can confidently choose activities. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a comprehensive knowledge of the possible signs and symptoms of abuse. She has an excellent understanding of the procedures to follow should she have concerns about a child. Children achieve the best possible outcomes in a safe, secure environment.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is outstanding
The childminder regularly undertakes training to improve her teaching skills. She uses her knowledge and experience to plan a wide range of exciting and engaging activities. For example, she has extended the exploration of natural textures and shapes with an 'insect hotel'. Children have gathered the materials required and have identified the insects living in the hotel. However, the childminder recognises that she could do even more to encourage children's keen interest in natural materials. The childminder is an excellent role model. She calmly motivates and encourages children, who show high levels of focus and concentration. The childminder has embraced outdoor learning. Children plant vegetables and flowers and proudly show their efforts. The childminder expertly supports learning with inquisitive questioning. For example, at the water tray, children respond to her confidently, using their newly acquired mathematical language and counting skills.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding
Children are settled, relaxed and have formed strong attachments with the childminder and each other. The childminder reflects on children's individual needs and finds inspiring and creative ways to promote positive behaviour. For example, she is using her knowledge to support children to use 'treasure baskets' as a means of managing their emotions thorough positive memories. The childminder supports children to understand how to stay safe and assess risk. She carefully supervises and supports children to use adult tools, such as knives, significantly enhancing their understanding of boundaries and safety. Children's understanding of difference and culture is promoted effectively, for example, through wide ranging, engaging experiences inside and outside the home.
p.3
Outcomes for children are outstanding
Children are enthusiastic learners and show exceptional independence. They choose their play activities, manage practical tasks and attend to their self-care needs. Children develop a good understanding of mathematical concepts and literacy skills. They are making rapid progress. Children have close, warm relationships with the childminder and their peers.
