This provision is good
Well-thought-out training enables the childminder to focus successfully on and develop areas of her practice that will benefit children most. She reviews her work and shows a good capacity to sustain ongoing improvements over time. The childminder encourages children to explore new ideas. In the garden, they mix paint together and observe the new colours they have made. Children then paint their hands and feet, and print on large paper. They enjoy the whole body sensation of making marks. Children play together well. Young children play with older children in the busy period before school. Older children are considerate towards younger children and all show a fondness towards each other. Children make good progress in their learning and development. The childminder plans a range of activities that successfully supports children's next steps in learning.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not sharply focus her assessment of children's learning to track children's good rates of progress precisely. Although there is a wide range of toys and equipment for children, the childminder does not always find ways to encourage children to make independent choices from what is on offer.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

sharpen the focus of assessments to monitor more precisely the good progress that children make motivate children to be able to make more independent choices in deciding with what and how they want to play.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector held discussions with the childminder at suitable times. She looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of the suitability of the childminder and household members. The inspector accompanied the childminder taking children to school and talked to children throughout the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder knows about child protection issues and the work of her Local Safeguarding Children Board. She supervises children closely, paying particular attention when on outings or walking children to school. She carries our risk assessments to help identify and minimise any possible risks to children. The childminder works effectively with other settings that children attend. This helps to provide children with good continuity in their learning. Parents are encouraged to contribute towards their children's learning. The childminder shares information about both their care and education, to help parents to support children's development at home.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children display strong communication and language skills. The childminder uses effective conversation, questioning and modelling of language to help boost children's vocabulary. Children enjoy sensory learning experiences. They delight in the sensation of sitting in tubs of water beads and explore sand and water play, such as filling up jugs from the hose pipe with the childminder. The childminder teaches children about the natural world and how the weather can affect activities. This intrigues children who feel the trampoline and the water, observing that is has become warm in the sunshine. Children attend a weekly music group. They excitedly show their singing and dance moves, and express themselves through moving their bodies to music. The childminder adapts activities to provide children with differing levels of challenge relevant to their age and ability. This ensures their continued interest and motivation as they play.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children move in and out of the house and garden as their play develops. The childminder promotes their good health and encourages them to be physically active. They bounce on the sunken trampoline and enjoying climbing at the park. The childminder promotes children's safety well. She explains to them about the effects of the hot sun on their bodies and why they need to drink plenty of water and wear a hat. The childminder applies fair and consistent expectations for behaviour to promote children's well-being. She uses effective ways to encourage older children's good behaviour. There are sanctions and rewards in place and children behave well. Children have close bonds with the childminder. They have high levels of self-esteem and confidence.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are well prepared for starting school. They gain excellent skills in literacy. Young children can recognise and name the letters that make up their name and are starting to use these skills to begin to read books. Children use counting and estimating in their play as they become confident in using their mathematical knowledge. They are adept at completing puzzles and enjoy testing their abilities. Children enjoy their time with the childminder and are settled and content.
