This provision is good
The childminder undertakes precise observation, assessment and planning, based on children's interests and what they need to learn next. This contributes to children's good progress, as does the childminder's effective interaction. The childminder effectively supports children's move to school. As part of this, there is excellent consultation with parents and other early years professionals. The childminder has a strong drive for improvement and her own continued professional development. She has focussed on developing the outdoor area, which has enhanced children's opportunities to explore and investigate. The childminder is highly committed to helping reduce early childhood obesity in partnership with parents. As part of this, there is excellent provision of food. Older children confidently and independently choose what they want to do in the safe environment. Positive relationships are observed between children and the childminder.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not optimise the learning environment indoors to maximise younger children's opportunities to make independent choices as they play. The childminder has not yet fully developed the performance management of assistants.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and children and observed children engaging in indoor and outdoor activities. The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder and her assistant. She looked at relevant documents and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector spoke with children during the inspection. The inspector viewed parent questionnaires.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of child protection issues. She takes responsibility for recruiting and inducting assistants, implementing rigorous procedures. This includes checking their suitability before and during their employment. The childminder uses a business development plan to help her reflect on her practice with her co-childminder. She has recently introduced supervisions and a development log for all adults. Although assistants have been on some training, this currently focuses on care practices. The childminder's qualification and further training have a positive impact on her own practice. She cascades this training to her co- childminder.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Older children, in particular, take part in a broad range of activities that engages them well. Parents receive good-quality information about children's care and learning. For example, they view and add to children's records of learning and receive regular newsletters and updates in other forms. Progress is also shared during the Christmas and Summer fairs and within daily diaries. The childminder uses good questioning to build on and extend children's learning as they play with coloured ice, for example. Older children understand why the ice has melted and that the disappearing red and blue ice blocks have created a pool of purple water. They learn to solve problems, such as why they have to add water to dry sand to successfully create a snail shape.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder works in close consultation with parents to foster children's emotional well-being on entry and thereafter. She is a good role model, helping children to learn essential early social skills. Assistants have attended a local authority initiative to improve dietary outcomes for children. This has had a positive impact on children's physical well- being. From this, the childminder has created a booklet for parents to encourage them to instil early messages about healthy eating at home. Children harvest an array of fruit and vegetables, as well as growing herbs in metal buckets. This helps children to learn where healthy food comes from and to care for living things.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Older children eagerly take part in activities, clearly enjoying their time with the childminder. Children are acquiring skills that prepare them for when they move to school. Babies and toddlers delight in exploring sensory media and materials outdoors, developing early curiosity. They communicate using gestures, words and sounds. Older children concentrate well while experimenting with water and tubing. They play collaboratively, take turns and share resources with their friends.
