Good daily handovers and regular summary reports help to keep parents informed about their children's progress. Additionally, staff provide parents with ideas and activities to do with their children at home to help continue their learning.  Children behave well. They understand the rules and boundaries in place. Staff consistently praise the children. This helps to promote their confidence and self- esteem.  The manager is extremely ambitious and committed to providing the best possible learning environment and experiences for children. playgroup's strengths and has identified areas for further development to help raise the quality of teaching to the highest level.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasions, staff do not provide enough challenge during some activities to help children make the best possible progress in their learning.  The programme of professional development is not sharply targeted to provide opportunities for staff to improve their practice and knowledge to an even higher level.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide children with the highest level of challenge during activities so that they make more rapid progress in their learning  enhance performance management to focus more precisely on helping staff to develop their teaching and assessment skills even further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with staff and children during the inspection.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the playgroup manager.  The inspector held a meeting with the playgroup manager. She looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of the suitability of staff working in the playgroup.  The inspector spoke to a number of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The manager has a strong commitment to ensure children's safety, and staff understand procedures to manage risk effectively. The manager and staff fully understand their safeguarding responsibilities. Staff understand the procedures to follow if they have concerns about a child's welfare. The manager makes effective use of information about individual children's stage of development to check on any gaps in learning. Additional support is put in place quickly to promote good progress. The manager has built relationships with other settings to support continual improvement. Parents are highly complimentary about the nursery and are confident in its leadership.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The manager and staff have improved their process for checking what children know and can do. They use their observations effectively to create a picture of each child's strengths and areas for development. The manager has introduced a noticeboard to keep parents informed about the daily activities. This helps to guide parents in supporting their children's learning at home. Staff consider innovative ways to engage children in mark- making activities to develop their early literacy and writing skills. For example, they practise writing their name on their graduation certificates. This helps to equip children with key skills needed for their future learning. Staff interact well during children's self- chosen play and adult-led activities. For example, familiar stories are read with expression to captivate children's interest. As Little Red Riding Hood walks through the woods, questions develop children's understanding of story structure and different characters. The

manager works alongside staff enabling her to observe and provide feedback on the quality of teaching, learning and assessment.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Caring and nurturing interactions by staff help children to feel emotionally secure. Children's individual care needs are very well met and their confidence and emotional well- being are effectively supported. The key-person system is effective and staff support children to settle happily and to develop close relationships with them. Staff also provide lots of praise and encouragement. Children are learning to be independent and initiate their own play and follow their own interests. Staff promote healthy lifestyles with children. They have plenty of opportunities to experience fresh air and exercise in the outdoor environment. For example, children practise balancing, running and taking turns as they rehearse for sports day. The children eat healthy fresh snacks.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress during their time at the playgroup. They are active and confident learners and independently initiate their own play. Children learn valuable skills for their future learning in preparation for moving on to school, such as respect for others and how to share and make decisions.
