This provision is good
The childminder uses her regular observations effectively to identify children's next steps in learning and monitor their progress. She plans activities well to help children make good progress from their developmental starting points. The childminder gathers valuable information from parents as children start. This helps her plan initial activities effectively to help children settle and ensures that she meets their care needs efficiently. Children behave well and are well mannered. The childminder gently helps children negotiate their play, share and be respectful of each other's choices. The childminder implements her policies and procedures effectively, ensuring that children are safe and well protected. She provides children with clear explanations and possible consequences to support their understanding of safe and hygienic practices, helping them to assess risk for themselves.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not use all opportunities that arise to help children understand mathematical concepts, especially simple number problems and early calculation. The childminder does not consistently ensure challenges provide opportunities across all areas of children's learning to support those children who learn better outside.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder's interactions as children played inside and outside. The inspector discussed with the childminder her understanding of the early years foundation stage requirements and how she evaluates her provision. The inspector considered the written views of parents and children. The inspector sampled documentation, including children's assessment records.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder works closely with parents to ensure that known and authorised adults collect children. For instance, she requires parents to inform her of any changes to those who may collect and to devise a password to protect children. The childminder understands her responsibility to report any concerns which affect a child's welfare to local agencies. The childminder evaluates her provision well. For example, she has identified the benefits of extending resources for outdoor play and is beginning to develop a more balanced range of experiences for those children who learn better outside. The childminder has professional discussions with other childminders to improve her practice and to share ideas. For example, she helped children create wooden spoon puppets of the royal family to support their interest in the recent royal wedding, helping them to learn about the lives of others.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder uses her knowledge of children's interests and the information shared by parents well to provide a range of experiences. Children gain good small-muscle skills to prepare them skilfully for early writing. For example, they use rolling pins successfully to flatten their pizza dough. They use knives precisely to prepare the ingredients for the topping, making choices and carefully following instructions. The childminder models language well. For example, she talks about the process and introduces children to descriptive words, supporting their communication and language skills effectively.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder is a good role model. She provides children with clear explanations so that they understand potential dangers, such as the possible consequences of putting a knife in their mouth. Children understand the importance of hygiene. For example, they know to wash their hands before they prepare food and before they eat, and do so independently. Children enjoy playing games together. They take turns and receive regular praise and encouragement from the childminder, helping them to build high levels of self-esteem.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children develop the skills that support them well in their future learning. Children develop good imagination as they explore pretend play. For example, following on from making their own pizzas, children create healthy meals. They use language well to explore their ideas; for instance, to explain the different ice cream flavours. Children are motivated to learn and make choices about their play. For example, they thoroughly enjoy taking turns to hide dinosaurs and count how many they find. When reading familiar books, children show awareness of rhyme and accurately say repeated phrases.
