This provision is good
The childminder encourages children to do things for themselves. Children are confident, self-assured and develop their independence from a young age. The childminder supports children's communication and language development particularly well. She engages children in conversation, introduces new words and encourages them to express themselves. The childminder places a strong focus on children developing good mathematical skills. For instance, she supports children to learn and recognise mathematical shapes in their environment. The childminder is a positive role model. She helps children to learn how to treat others with care and respect, use good manners, and how to share their toys and resources. The childminder is passionate about providing a safe and high-quality service to children and their families. She regularly reflects on and evaluates her setting to identify ongoing improvements.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not gather precise information about children's achievements when they join the setting to help her to accurately evaluate the impact of her teaching. The childminder does not make use of all opportunities to help develop children's early understanding of letters and the sounds that they represent.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities and the impact of teaching on children's learning. The inspector held discussions with the childminder and spoke with children. The inspector discussed children's learning and progress with the childminder and evaluated an activity with her. The inspector looked at a sample of documents, including children's learning records, and policies and procedures. The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder maintains a safe and secure environment. She remains vigilant at all times and supervises children well to support their safety and welfare. She knows what to look for and what procedures to follow should she have any concerns about a child. The childminder monitors children's progress well. This helps her to identify and support any potential gaps in their learning and development. The childminder shares information with other settings that children attend. This promotes consistency of care. Written testimonials from parents indicate that they are very happy with the care and learning experiences their children receive from the childminder.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The qualified childminder demonstrates a secure knowledge and understanding of how children learn. She observes children as they play and uses this information to build on their learning effectively. She plans stimulating experiences that link well to children's interests. For example, children are captivated during exciting activities, such as making slime and have opportunities to solve problems as they mix and use a range of different sensory materials. The childminder asks questions to extend and promote children's thinking skills around what they observe is happening as the material changes. The childminder provides good opportunities for young children to develop their imaginative skills as she plays alongside them. For example, children enthusiastically use their toy emergency vehicles to act out a story narrated by the childminder.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are happy and settled in the childminder's care and they develop a secure attachment with her. She responds well to their individual needs and values their uniqueness. Children's health and physical development are promoted successfully. Children gain an understanding of keeping themselves safe through everyday routines and outings. For example, they are taught to use safety knives with care as they help prepare their snacks and meals. Children have regular opportunities to go on visits in the local community, such as to the park, to explore nature and find out more about the natural world. Children are involved in a variety of activities that helps them to learn about different festivals and celebrations and develop their understanding of diversity.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their starting points and gain skills in readiness for school. Young children are confident and show good levels of involvement in activities. They develop a positive attitude to learning and are enthusiastic learners. Children understand appropriate rules and boundaries and receive consistent praise for their positive behaviour and achievements. The childminder promotes children's literacy skills well. Children enjoy reading books and listening to their favourite stories. The childminder provides children with regular opportunities to mix with other groups of children, where they learn to develop good social skills.
