This provision is good
The quality of teaching is good. The childminder skilfully facilitates children's play to help them think for themselves and gives them time to respond to questions. She ensures the activities children participate in are challenging and help children to learn and develop. The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding issues. She completes relevant safeguarding training and implements what she has learned in everyday practice to ensure children are safeguarded. For example, she effectively records, monitors and discusses potential child protection concerns. The childminder teaches children about self-care and keeping themselves safe and healthy. She applies sun cream to young children before they go out to play in the sun and explains the benefits. The childminder and her co-minder work well together and act as good role models for the children. Children behave well and play cooperatively alongside one another. The

childminder teaches them good manners and about sharing and turn taking. She praises children when they display good behaviour.

It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always ensure the assistant fully understands all of the setting’s policies and procedures. Systems to check the ongoing suitability of assistants are not fully effective.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching and the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector spoke with the children, the childminder and her co-childminder at convenient times during the inspection. The inspector sampled various documents, including children's learning records, accident records and relevant policies and procedures. The inspector and the childminder observed children during activities and discussed children's learning and progress. The inspector took account of parents' views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has suitable safeguarding procedures and understands them well. She is able to describe the signs and symptoms of child abuse, and also the procedure to follow if she has concerns about a child. She has a good understanding of wider safeguarding issues, such as female genital mutation and radicalisation. The childminder swiftly identifies children who are not making sufficient progress in their learning. She discusses concerns with parents and involves other professionals to ensure referrals are made to the appropriate teams, so that children receive the required support. The childminder effectively self-evaluates her practice by including the views of parents and children, as well her co-minder and assistant, in order to improve practice. For example she has improved opportunities for children’s learning in the outdoor area, as they help her to plant and grow vegetables and learn about nature.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder knows the children well and she targets activities to support their development. She involves parents in their child's learning and obtains information about their achievements at home. She uses all the information she knows about children to plan effectively to help them make good progress. For example, she engages children in an enjoyable arts and crafts activity which provides the children with lots of choices, in order to encourage them to use more language. She interacts well with children and understands how to promote learning by planning activities that are challenging, as well as joining children in play that they initiate themselves. For example, she encourages three year old children to use chalk on the ground to trace around numbers so that they start to learn about making meaningful marks. Parents comment positively on the communication they receive and the progress their children make.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children learn about the significance of good hygiene from a very young age. They are encouraged to wash hands before snack time and lunch. The childminder is very attentive to the children's needs and as a result children form close relationships with her. They approach her for comfort and seek her praise when they do something well. Young children build friendships with one another and play together pleasantly.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are progressing well in all areas of learning. They are developing skills which will support them to transition smoothly to the next stage of their learning. For example, babies are becoming confident to explore and older children are taught independence for starting school. They learn to interact well with other children and follow instructions. They develop skills that help them to recognise their name and have the confidence to try to write it. Children who have identified additional needs are also making good progress. This is because the childminder works well with parents and other agencies to ensure their learning and development is supported consistently.
