This provision is good

 Children are respectful and show great kindness and consideration for each other. For example, older children play alongside younger children and support them positively in their activities and routines. Children's behaviour is good.  The childminder knows the children very well. She plans activities and experiences that she knows children enjoy and helps them to develop their skills.  The childminder and her assistant give high regard to children's welfare. Children are very happy, settled and confident. They have plenty of fun and feel secure in the warm, welcoming and supportive environment.  The childminder and her assistant communicate effectively with parents on a daily basis to keep them well informed about their children's time at the setting. This successfully supports continuity of children's care.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not fully established a good two-way flow of information with the schools children attend, to be able to complement fully the learning and experiences that take place there.  The childminder does not make the most of opportunities to extend children's understanding of the importance of good hygiene, to support their good health further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 build on the partnerships with other settings, in particular for children who attend school  make more-effective use of opportunities for children to learn about the importance of good hygiene.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with the childminder, assistant and children at suitable times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including first-aid certificates and evidence of her assistant's suitability.  The inspector observed the quality of the childminder and her assistant's interactions with children.  The inspector viewed the spaces, toys and equipment used for childminding purposes, indoors and outdoors.  The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant have a good knowledge of possible signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect. They clearly know to whom they should report any concerns, should they feel a child is at risk of harm. The childminder ensures her assistant knows and follows all of her policies and procedures, and receives regular supervision. The childminder's evaluation process provides good opportunities for parents, children and her assistant to contribute and share their ideas about the setting. This helps the childminder to access the quality of the setting accurately and where to target improvements. The childminder keeps her childcare knowledge up to date. For example, she attends training, reads childcare publications and networks with other professionals.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children show good levels of engagement and motivation as they play. The childminder ensures that resources are appropriate for different ages of children who come to her setting. She provides opportunities for children to develop their creative skills. For example, children spend time choosing resources to complete their pictures of farmyard animals. The childminder supports children in recognising words and letters during enjoyable activities, for example, as they play word-search games together. Children have daily opportunities to play outdoors. They choose from a good range of equipment to support their physical development. For example, they bounce on the trampoline and draw on the patio using a range of chalks. Children learn how to keep themselves and others safe. For example, during outings they learn how to cross the road safely and walk sensibly along footpaths.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are very independent and familiar with routines. They demonstrate friendly behaviour with each other, take turns and play cooperatively. The childminder praises children for their efforts, which helps to build their confidence and self-esteem. Any minor disagreements are sensitively managed by the childminder or by her assistant. Mealtimes are social events, where children sit together and talk about their day at school. Children are developing good independence skills. They help to set the table at mealtimes, pour out their own drinks and manage their own personal care needs.
