This provision is good

 The qualified and experienced childminder observes children as they play and completes accurate assessments of their learning. Planning for future learning is based on what they already know and can do, generally.  Children are extremely happy and emotionally secure. The childminder is kind, patient and nurturing. She provides praise and encouragement to help support children's confidence and sense of self-esteem.  Children develop an understanding of danger as they learn to keep themselves safe. For example, they learn about road safety while out walking in the local area with the childminder.  The childminder develops effective partnerships with parents, overall. They have a daily exchange of information regarding the children's care and well-being. Parents are very complimentary and value the service she provides.  Children's physical skills are well supported as they freely access the childminder's

garden and have regular visits to the beach.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although the childminder establishes positive relationships with parents, she does not gather information about what children already know and can do at home.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 gather information from parents about what children know and can do before they first start.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children throughout the inspection.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation and evidence of suitability of all adults living in the household.  The inspector took into account the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the signs and symptoms of harm and where to refer any concerns about a child's welfare. She completes training covering a range of safeguarding matters to help support her in her role. The childminder effectively assesses potential hazards in her home, garden and on outings. She identifies and minimises potential risks. The childminder continuously checks on children's progress. This helps her to identify any gaps in their development and address these with additional support. The childminder meets with other childminders to share good practice and gather new ideas. She evaluates her provision and makes changes to enhance her service.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses her knowledge and experience to effectively teach and engage children in activities. She skilfully intervenes to develop learning further. The childminder promotes children's language and communication skills well as she uses words to describe their actions. For example, she describes tubs as 'full' and 'empty' as children play with water. The childminder gets down to children's level and joins in with their play. For example, when playing with sand she encourages children to use their fingers to make marks and patterns. Children's literacy skills are fostered and they skilfully use toys to act out stories the childminder is reading. Children develop an awareness of the natural world as they spend time outdoors and watch leaves move in the wind.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children flourish in this simulating and welcoming environment. They feel secure and display high levels of emotional well-being. Children are keen to instigate their own play. For example, they laugh with delight as they roll chalks across a chair and watch as they fall to the floor. Children demonstrate a strong sense of pride as they take responsibility for their own needs. They independently choose the paints and brushes they want to use for their own pictures. Children display delight in their achievements and accept the very genuine praise they receive from the childminder. Children's behaviour is exemplary. They willingly share, take turns and tidy away toys, creating a happy atmosphere for all.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points. They are engaged and eager to learn. Children enjoy games which help them practise their early mathematical skills of recognising size and counting. They concentrate for long periods relative to their age. Children effectively acquire the necessary skills to prepare them for their next stages in learning, including nursery and school.
