This provision is good

 Children are happy and enjoy their time with the childminder. She provides a welcoming environment where children play and learn. Children make good progress in their learning.  The childminder is a good role model for children. She is calm and gives children lots of praise and encouragement. Children learn to share, take turns and be kind to one another.  Parents report how happy they are with the childminder and the service she offers.  The childminder keeps her knowledge of early years practice up to date through training and meeting with other early years professionals.  The childminder uses self-evaluation well to identify and address areas for improvement. She considers the views of parents and children to help improve her practice.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always make the most of opportunities to develop children's awareness of differences among people, to foster a respect for children's own cultures and those of other people.  The provider does not fully promote effective strategies to help and encourage parents to support their child's learning at home.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to learn to value and respect their own cultures and those of others  share more ideas and strategies to help and encourage parents to support their child's learning at home.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the areas used for childminding. She spoke to the children and the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection and observed a variety of activities.  The inspector looked at evidence of the suitability of the childminder and those living on the premises.  The inspector discussed children's learning and development, and sampled their records.  The inspector took account of the views of parents by reading a number of their comments obtained by the childminder.  The inspector reviewed a selection of policies and procedures, including safeguarding. She discussed risk assessments and the childminder's self-evaluation process.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of the signs to look for that a child may be at risk, and the procedures to follow if she has concerns. She undertakes risk assessments to help keep children safe in the home and on outings. The childminder monitors children's progress closely so that any gaps in their learning are quickly identified and support can be put into place. The childminder understands the importance of working with other settings that children attend and shares relevant information with them. This helps to support consistency in children's learning and development. Effective policies and procedures underpin the efficient running of the setting.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder completes good observations and assessments of children's achievements and uses these effectively to identify their next steps in learning. She supports children's communication and language skills well. For example, children were excited to talk about the treasure they found while playing in the sandpit. They recall their favourite holidays and the childminder actively listens, valuing their stories. She uses opportunities to extend their learning further. For example, they explored items to see if they would sink or float in water and spoke about whether the items were 'heavy' or 'light'. Children are developing good writing skills. They use pens carefully to draw detailed pictures and explain the characters they have made.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Flexible procedures help children to settle quickly into the childminder's home. Children enjoy physical exercise and fresh air daily and the childminder provides them with a range of nutritious snacks, such as fresh fruit. This helps children to be healthy. The childminder helps children to understand about keeping themselves safe, including reminders about how to cross the road safely. Children form firm friendships and show kindness to each other. They play cooperatively together. For example, children giggle as they pretend to go shopping and buy food.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress from their starting points. They are developing a range of skills and knowledge in preparation for their next stage in learning and the eventual move on to school. Children show they are confident and are becoming increasingly independent, for example, as they choose what they would like to play with or put on their shoes to play outdoors.
