This provision is good
All children make good progress. Staff prepare children well for the next stage of their education. Children with any gaps in their learning catch up quickly. Older children recognise sounds and rhyme. Younger children know the names of basic shapes and use their emerging language skills to explain their drawings, for example. Staff plan activities that they know will interest and motivate children to take the next steps in learning. Staff accurately assess children's learning and provide specific activities to check their understanding. For example, children match colours and numbers on cars in the toy car park. The manager works closely with the committee to continually improve the pre-school. Together with staff and parents, they accurately evaluate what they provide for children. For example, they have provided furniture at the correct height for younger children, and a balanced and healthy diet for the snacks they provide.
p.1
This provision is good
Children sustain their interest and concentration in the activities. They cooperate and play well with their friends, eagerly developing their imaginative play when pretending to look after farm animals, for example.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The manager does not fully develop staff's teaching of early mathematics so that children clearly understand what numbers represent and can group and compare items. Staff do not consistently provide opportunities to challenge older children and extend their critical-thinking skills.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
What the setting needs to do to improve further
ensure that all staff fully understand how children develop their early knowledge of mathematical concepts, particularly for numbers, grouping and comparing sets of objects provide more challenging opportunities for older children to develop their critical- thinking skills.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed teaching and learning activities, indoors and outdoors. The inspector spoke to children, parents and staff, and took their views into account. The inspector conducted a joint observation of teaching and met with the manager. The inspector sampled policies, procedures and other documents. The inspector met with the chair of the committee.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The manager improves teaching by regularly observing staff's practice and using her good knowledge and experience to improve their skills. For example, she supports staff to develop children's skills in many areas of learning and development through one activity. The manager uses the assessment information about different children to make sure that no group falls behind. Safeguarding is effective. The manager and staff communicate effectively with other professionals to ensure that all involved have a full understanding of children's circumstances so that they can protect them from harm.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Staff provide resources that encourage children to talk about everyday tasks, such as washing and ironing. Children eagerly use the toy washing machines, discussing which clothes are dirty and hanging them on the line, for example. Staff support children to develop their physical and some mathematical skills, understanding how to pour liquids and describe whether containers are full or empty. Children learn about shapes and colours when making a path with different mats, for example. Staff work closely with other professionals, including health visitors and speech and language therapists, if they have any concerns about children's progress. Staff use signs well to support early language development and give individual children the support they need to make more rapid progress to develop their speech. Staff observe children's play accurately and follow their interests well so that children eagerly talk about what they are learning.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Staff encourage children to spend time carefully drawing their favourite characters. Staff listen carefully as children explain their drawings of all the members of their family. Staff support children well to extend their play by introducing real food for the model animals on the farm, for example. Children cooperate well with their friends, using the timer to take turns operating toy washing machines, or playing catch and bowling hoops to each other. They wash their hands independently and try different types of food. Staff provide security for children through the high-quality relationships they form with them and their families. Staff form a strong partnership with parents. They give parents accurate information about their children's progress and what they learn each day so that parents can support learning at home. Parents value the support and advice staff give them.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Older children count accurately and recognise their names, supporting their younger friends to find their places at lunchtime. They sing songs, remembering all the words and signs for the names of colours. They enjoy familiar stories and recite their favourites. Younger children learn well from the older ones, following their lead when jumping on a trail of shapes. They eagerly climb steps and come down the slide. They enjoy playing with toy cars, matching colours and beginning to count. Children are tolerant and show respect for each other. They are proud of the drawings and pictures that they do.
