p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

There has been an escalation in incidents of challenging behaviour in recent weeks, but this is not a reflection of the quality of care provided. Young people reported that they have ‘some good days and some bad’. Young people also expressed that they feel upset about damage to the home and assaults on staff. There are very good plans in place to monitor and deal with the current challenges so that young people’s progress is not disrupted. Professionals are clear that young people continue to make good progress, despite the current difficulties. Inspection report children’s home: SC434806 4 There are excellent relationships between young people and staff. Young people receive high-quality support from staff, who are very skilled in providing good quality care and support.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff are creative and continually ‘think outside the box’ with regard to how they can support young people. They think about every detail, however small. There is every opportunity for progress because of this approach.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

All young people are accessing education. Gaps in school attendance when young people are new to the area are kept to a minimum. Some young people have made so much educational progress that their life chances are significantly improved.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Young people look forward to a brighter future. They have hopes, aspirations and good plans in place for when they leave. They are equipped with the skills they need in order to manage well when they move on to the next stage of their lives.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

When young people are new to the home, leaders make sure that staff know how to look after them and meet their needs. However, care planning is weak in areas relating to health and education for newly admitted young people. There is the potential for drift if this is not put right.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Young people’s safety is always of paramount importance to all staff, whatever their role. Young people are always ‘in a in a safe pair of hands’. When young people put themselves at risk, staff are consistently there to guide them.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff training is well organised. Staff have the skills and knowledge to respond to young people’s heightened behaviours, or any accidents. One recent accident involving a young person was managed very well and staff provided instant and effective first aid.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

When young people go missing, there is always a prompt and effective response. This means that the young person returns as soon as possible and the risk of harm is reduced.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Young people’s behaviour has escalated in recent weeks. Staff are committed to finding ways to improve their practice and manage incidents more effectively. Physical intervention to manage behaviour is used as a last resort. Young people have said that they think that behaviour management practice, including the use of physical intervention, is fair.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Young people are well supported to reduce their risk-taking behaviour. Some young people have made particularly good progress, particularly in reducing incidents of self- harm and missing-from-home incidents. Inspection report children’s home: SC434806 5

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

At the time of the inspection, there had been a significant amount of property damage and some young people were not happy with the state of their home. The manager acknowledges the views of young people. She works proactively to maintain the building, while supporting each young person through this difficult period.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The home is led well by the manager and everyone speaks highly of her. She always has young people’s best interests at heart. Young people have a strong voice and can have their say. The registered manager and staff listen, respond and always take young people’s concerns and comments into consideration. They want the best for young people and advocate for what they need and should expect.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The staff team’s approach is highly effective. There is lively, professional discussion and debate about how to best meet young people’s needs. Nobody is afraid to speak their mind.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

During the recent period of unsettled behaviour in the home, staff have remained highly focused on young people’s needs. They continue to value and respect each individual young person, and demonstrate resilience and commitment. They regularly continue to work after their shifts end, demonstrating their commitment.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager has focused well on each young person’s needs. The balance between not giving up on young people and knowing when it is time for a placement move, is considered carefully.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Close working with other professionals ensures that all are working with the most up-to- date information at this complex time. One social worker said: ‘I am really impressed.’

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The three recommendations made at the last inspection have been met. There have been improvements to advocacy, and the gaps in education and in meeting young people’s personal and health needs have been addressed.

p.5

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after. Inspection report children’s home: SC434806 6 Using the ‘Social care common inspection framework’, this inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well
