She shares her expectations with the children and explains why certain behaviour is not acceptable.  The childminder works well with parents and gives them regular updates on their children's progress.  The childminder has a good overview of her practice and has set clear goals to build ongoing improvement and develop her skills.  The childminder supports children's learning well. For instance, by making timely interventions in play and providing structure when needed.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make the most of opportunities to support children's early drawing and early writing skills.  The childminder has not fully explored ways to cover the different areas of learning to support those who learn best outdoors.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop more ways for children to practise their early drawing and early writing skills regularly  develop opportunities further to reflect the different areas of learning to support those who learn best outdoors.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the premises with the childminder.  The inspector observed an activity and discussed children's progress with the childminder. She spoke with the children when appropriate.  The inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and children.  The inspector looked at some documentation and held a discussion with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good overview of her practice and, since the last inspection, has set clear goals to build ongoing improvement. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge and understanding of what to look out for and procedures to follow should she have concerns about a child in her care. The childminder knows what to do if an allegation is made against her or any adult in her home. She checks all toys, resources and all parts of her home to protect children from harm. She monitors her work carefully to ensure that planning and assessments support best outcomes for children. The childminder keeps a close check on children's progress to readily identify and support those who need it.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's early mathematical skills well. For instance, she teaches children to count the number of bricks they use for building and teaches them mathematical language, such as 'more' or 'less'. The childminder teaches children good early reading skills, for instance, by discussing their favourite stories, and she questions them effectively. She supports their understanding of the natural world effectively. For example, children plant and grow vegetables with her and learn how things grow and where they come from.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are content and settle well. The childminder interacts warmly with them and responds well to their emotional needs. She spends time getting to know children when they first arrive and values each child as an individual. The childminder teaches children good safety awareness. For instance, they learn how to climb the stairs with care and caution, and the childminder ensures they know how to leave the premises in an emergency. Children are able to do things for themselves. For example, they choose their own breakfast cereal, feed themselves and learn how to dress themselves. Children have healthy lifestyles, such as through daily outdoor physical challenges where they practise jumping, balancing and moving in different ways. Children benefit from well-balanced meals and snacks.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and motivated to learn. They play cooperatively together and learn to share and take turns. Children learn to respect others from different cultural or religious backgrounds. They are able to operate simple technology independently. Children learn valuable skills to support their future learning.
