Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder and one of her assistants. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living and working on the premises. The inspector took account of the views of parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The experienced childminder is enthusiastic and enjoys her time with the children. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection and wider safeguarding issues. She knows the procedure to follow if she has a concern. The childminder carries out daily checks of the environment to ensure it is suitable and safe. The childminder uses a range of childminding forums and resource centres to keep her knowledge up-to-date and to help her to extend her practice. There is a well-focused improvement plan in place to help develop the service even further. She takes advantage of any available training to help increase her knowledge and skills.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder uses children's interests and experiences to plan an interesting range of activities that capture their curiosity. She also uses the changing seasons to help children learn about the natural environment. For example, children take regular walks and look at the changes. They collect items of interest and learn about how animals live in their natural habitats. The childminder observes children and plans activities for their interests and enjoyment. For example, she provides a good range of resources, such as sand, water, rice, pasta, dough and paints for children to explore and be creative. She places a sharp focus on introducing new ideas, concepts and vocabulary during her interactions.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder works closely with parents when their children first start and collates useful information about their needs to help them settle. The induction period is flexible and tailored according to the needs of each child. The childminder places a good priority on promoting children's emotional well-being. She provides good opportunities for children to be outdoors in the fresh air. They use the physical play equipment in the garden and when on outings. The childminder teaches children about the benefits of a healthy diet and encourages them to try new foods. Children behave well and learn about the rules in place for their safety. For example, children learn about car safety, road safety and how to keep safe around animals.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children make good progress in preparation for school. Children have a close relationship with the childminder and are happy in her care. Children show a real interest in making marks as they play. For example, they use various writing materials, including chalk, charcoal and paints to make marks and patterns. They show an interest in books and stories and benefit from attending the local library. Children show a keen interest in their natural environment and the world. For example, they learn about dinosaurs, what they ate and where they lived. Children have good opportunities to bake and prepare food. For example, children help make bread, cakes, biscuits and pizza. They learn to count and consider size as they play and enjoy their time at the childminder's home.
