This provision is good
Partnership with parents is strong. The childminder supports regular two-way communication with parents and helps them to continue children's learning at home. For example, she shares children's favourite books and resources with them to read to their children at home. Children form close bonds with the childminder. They smile, crawl to her and climb on her lap for a cuddle. She supports their emotional needs sensitively. For instance, when they wake up from their sleep, she supports them closely until they are ready to play. Children are settled and they build confidence. They are prepared well for the next stages in their learning. The childminder supports children's communication and language development well. For example, she sings to them, introduces them to new words and describes what they do. Very young children babble, repeat sounds and learn to use gestures to express their views and needs.
p.1
This provision is good
The childminder monitors children's progress regularly and identifies precise next steps in their learning. This helps her to guide their development effectively and reduce any gaps in their learning.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not provide many opportunities for young children to explore different textures and natural materials. The childminder does not make best use of the outdoor environment to enhance opportunities for children to play and explore in the fresh air.
p.1

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the children and how the childminder interacted with them. The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder and evaluated how the childminder reviews the quality of her teaching. The inspector viewed a sample of documents, including children's learning records. The inspector held discussions with the childminder at appropriate times. The inspector took account of the views of parents and children.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder reflects well on her practice and targets improvements effectively with a sharp focus on children's achievements. For example, she reviews the organisation of space and resources when young children are learning to walk and ensures the environment is safe for them to explore their new skill. She works closely with parents to meet children's individual needs, such as when they are weaning. The shared approach helps to support continuity in children's care as they move between home and the childminder's setting. The childminder updates her knowledge of current practices in childcare, for instance, through extra reading and research. She uses her knowledge and skills well to provide good-quality learning experiences for children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of child protection issues and keeps herself updated of changes to guidelines.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder supports young children well to extend their self-awareness. For instance, she provides them with opportunities to look at themselves in a mirror. She helps them learn to identify body parts, such as their nose and mouth. The childminder plans activities well to stimulate children's curiosity to explore. For example, they eagerly observe the bubbles floating in the air and stretch their arm out to touch them. She introduces children to counting, which helps them to build on their early mathematical skills. The childminder provides opportunities for children to explore different musical instruments, such as castanets and bells. She successfully helps them to extend their creativity.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder helps children to learn to identify facial expressions that reflect different emotions. For example, she shares a picture book with them about emotions and makes different expressions to help support their understanding. Children behave well and she teaches them to share and take turns with others. Children build on their physical skills. For example, they explore climbing equipment and learn to come down the slide. They benefit from opportunities to explore resources, such as pictures of themselves and their families. The childminder effectively supports children's sense of belonging. All children and their families feel included.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Young children learn to feed themselves independently. All children, including those who are new to the setting, build good personal, social and emotional skills. They gain confidence in their abilities and form a positive sense of themselves. They learn to choose and explore resources independently and develop as curious learners. They are prepared well for the next stages in their learning and their eventual move on to school.
