Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not have robust routines for ensuring that she obtains all required information from parents about their child. This includes who has parental responsibility.  The childminder does not consistently take into account the differing ages and abilities of the children, to plan effectively for their individual learning needs.  The childminder does not make the most of professional development opportunities that are available to her, to develop her practice further.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder builds warm and caring relationships with the children in her care. She gives cuddles, shows affection and supports children to feel safe.  Children enjoy being active and spend lots of time outdoors. They develop good dexterity and use small tools and equipment, such as paintbrushes and chalks.  Children join in with songs and rhymes. They listen to different music and recognise the song that the childminder plays when it is time to tidy the toys away. They work together to ensure they tidy all of the toys away in readiness for their snack.  Children enjoy meeting familiar adults and children at different groups they attend during the week. This supports their social skills.  Parents speak positively about the service they and their children receive. They comment that their children enjoy being in the childminder's care and engage in a variety of activities.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

Due Date

 take steps to ensure that all required information about children is obtained 22/06/2018

p.2

Due Date

 develop the planning of activities, taking into account the individual needs, interests and stage of development of each child, and use this to plan challenging and enjoyable experiences for children. 01/07/2018

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 consistently engage in available continuous professional development opportunities to ensure knowledge is kept up to date and teaching skills are improved to a higher level.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke to children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector evaluated an activity with the childminder.  The inspector looked at required documentation for the smooth running of the provision and discussed processes for self-evaluation.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder does not ensure that parents complete all required documentation. As a result, children's well-being is not fully supported. The childminder minimises potential hazards within the home, garden and when on outings. She understands the different signs that may indicate that a child is at risk of harm and neglect. The childminder understands the referral procedures should she have a concern about a child in her care. She communicates well with parents and informs them about their child's day, their progress and their achievements.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder observes and assesses children's learning and development, and tracks their progress. She uses the information to plan activities to support children's learning. However, at times younger children lose interest in activities because the planning does not take into account their differing ages and abilities. For example, younger children become restless during story time because the book is too old for them to understand. Children enjoy sensory experiences and explore different textures. For example, they use their hands and different size spoons to scoop different coloured rice into containers. Older children recognise the different colours of the rice and make marks in the rice with their hands and the spoons. They confidently count in sequence to five and identify numbers on pictures of fish hidden in the rice. Children use materials, such as play dough to recreate their own model snails. They carefully pick up stick-on eyes and place them

onto their snail before adding a shell onto its back.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Weaknesses in leadership and management impact on children's welfare. That said, children settle gradually in to the childminder's care and build friendships with the other children the childminder cares for. The childminder meets children's care routines. She ensures younger children remain clean and comfortable throughout the day and attends to their personal needs well. Children enjoy healthy foods, such as a variety of fresh fruits and prepared sandwiches with various fillings. The childminder takes into account their individual dietary needs and preferences. Children enjoy spending time outdoors each day and being active. They enjoy visiting the park, using large climbing equipment and running around. Children learn about diversity and the wider world, and see positive images of people from different parts of the world in the resources, such as books and small-world play.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Older children develop skills that support them for learning in readiness for the move on to school. However, younger children are not making as much progress as possible due to the weaknesses in planning. Children use a variety of chalks and brushes with water outdoors to make marks. Older children learn to take care of their personal hygiene and the importance of washing their hands at appropriate times during the day.
