Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 On occasion, the childminder cares for more children than her registration allows. She is unable to ensure that children's individual needs are met effectively during these times.  The childminder and her assistants do not consistently extend children’s ideas. They frequently answer their own questions before children have had time to think and respond. Children do not always receive support when they want to try new things.  The childminder and her assistants do not use observation and assessments findings effectively to help them plan for the next stages in children's development. Children's progress is not monitored as well as it should be.  The limited monitoring and evaluation of the provision means that the childminder fails to identify areas that require improvement.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children have good opportunities to learn about different people and their communities. For example, children learn about the culture of African people and eagerly join in multicultural songs.  The childminder carries out regular risk assessments indoors and outdoors to reduce potential hazards to children.  The childminder and her assistants give clear and consistent messages regarding the expected behaviour of children. Children behave well.  The childminder provides interesting resources that support children’s play and learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure the number of children cared for at any one time does not exceed the permitted ratios specified for childminders, including the maximum numbers allowed when working with assistants. 22/06/2018

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 strengthen knowledge and understanding of how to monitor children's progress and use information gained from observations to identify and plan for their next steps in learning  give children enough time to consider questions and think of answers  improve self-evaluation to identify and address weaknesses in the provision more accurately and enhance outcomes for children  enable children to follow their natural curiosities and interests.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's teaching and its impact on the children's learning.  The inspector checked documents, including the childminder's background and suitability checks, and training certificates.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder about children's individual learning and development.  The inspector carried out a joint observation of a planned activity with the childminder.  The inspector looked at a range of the childminder's policies and procedures, including those relating to safeguarding.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder demonstrates an appropriate awareness of child protection procedures and ensures that she shares this knowledge with her assistants. However, she does not ensure that she keeps within the required ratios at all times to meet each child's needs effectively, particularly when working with assistants. Self- evaluation is not effective in identifying the weaknesses in the childminder's provision to ensure that outcomes for children are good. Parents report positively about the care provided and how much their children enjoy attending. They state that the childminder provides a home-from-home environment. The childminder continually monitors her assistant's practice to help promote consistency in their approach. For example, she meets with them regularly to identify their training needs.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder and her assistants observe and assess children as they play. However, they do not evaluate the learning outcomes effectively to plan what children need to learn next. The childminder provides a stimulating environment with a good range of activities and resources. However, the childminder and her assistants do not support children well enough to follow their own ideas. The childminder and her assistants are animated and engaging while they sing a variety of nursery rhymes to the children. Children join in excitedly and have great fun jumping and clapping in time to the music.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The weaknesses in the quality of teaching and learning mean that, at times, children's natural curiosities are not recognised. However, the childminder and her assistants provide children with lots of praise and encouragement during activities. This helps to develop children's self-esteem and confidence. Children's behaviour is consistently good. The childminder helps children to mix and socialise with others in different ways. For example, they regularly attend toddler groups within the neighbourhood. The childminder supports children well in developing good healthy practices. For example, they drink plenty of water, have good opportunities to play energetically indoors and outdoors, and have an awareness of good hygiene and keeping healthy in the sun.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children do not consistently make the best possible progress in their learning and development. However, they gain some skills that prepare them for their move to school. Children learn to communicate, explore and socialise with others. Their physical skills are developing well. For example, they ride bicycles around the track in the garden and are encouraged to hold pencils correctly and make marks on paper.
