This provision is good

 The highly qualified and experienced childminder uses what she knows about children to support them effectively in their learning. She observes and assesses children's progress. Planning for future learning is based on what they already know and can do.  The childminder develops effective partnerships with parents. They have a daily exchange of information regarding children's care and well-being. Parents are complimentary about the childminder and the service that she provides.  Children gain an understanding of danger and they know how to keep themselves safe. For example, they learn road safety while out walking in the local area with the childminder.  Children's physical development is well supported and they enjoy days out to the beach and the park.  The childminder meets with other childminders to share good practice and gather new ideas.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always give children enough time to develop their thought processes and thinking skills during their chosen play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 give children more time to think, solve problems and come up with their own ideas.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities, indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children throughout the inspection.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation and evidence of suitability of all adults living in the household.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents and spoke to parents during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection issues and of the local safeguarding procedures to follow if she has any concerns about a child's welfare. She keeps her knowledge and practice updated by completing safeguarding training and amending policies as necessary. The childminder effectively assesses potential hazards in her home, garden and while on outings. She identifies and minimises possible risks. The childminder continuously checks on children's progress. This helps her to identify any gaps in their development and address these with additional support. The childminder evaluates the strength of her provision and makes changes to enhance her service further.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder enables children to develop very good communication skills. She uses effective questioning to help enable children's ability to hold a conversation. For example, as children are painting she encourages them to describe their pictures and the colours they are using. The childminder skilfully supports the development of children's early mathematical skills as she sits alongside them, encouraging them to practise their counting. For example, children play with a dressing-up puzzle and count the number of shoes. Children's literacy skills are fostered and they listen to the childminder read stories. They independently access their favourite books and spend time retelling the story to themselves.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children flourish in this welcoming and nurturing environment. Children display very high levels of confidence and emotional well-being. They develop strong bonds with the childminder and clearly relish the time they spend with her. Children show high levels of fun and enjoyment as they play, for example, they giggle with delight as the wooden dolls they are trying to stand upright fall over. Children display pride in their achievements and accept the very genuine praise they receive from the childminder. The childminder makes good use of community activities to enable children to interact with other adults and their peers. This supports children's personal, social and emotional development very well. The childminder gently reminds children of their behaviour as they play.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make typical and sometimes better than typical progress from their starting points. They are engaged and eager to learn as they enjoy practising their early mark- making skills with paint, brushes and sponges. Children concentrate for a long time. They are confident when meeting visitors to the childminder's home and happily invite them into their play. Children effectively acquire the necessary skills to prepare them for their next stages in learning, including nursery and school.
