This provision is good
The childminder uses a range of teaching strategies to help children build on their mathematical skills. She introduces them to mathematical language, such as 'big', 'small', 'heavy' and 'light'. She teaches them to count objects. Children develop skills that help to prepare them for the next stages in their learning. Young children form positive relationships with the childminder and engage well with her, initiating interactions and sharing their experiences with her. She joins in enthusiastically in their play and she supports their emotional and learning needs effectively. The childminder assesses how children progress from their starting points and makes good use of the information to identify and swiftly narrow any gaps in their learning. Self-evaluation is effective. The childminder reflects well on her practice and identifies focused targets for improvements. She seeks opportunities, such as training, to

strengthen her understanding of changes to statutory guidelines, and reviews her policies and procedures regularly to ensure they are updated.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Children have few opportunities to deepen their understanding of what makes them and their families special. The childminder does not provide consistent opportunities for children to freely access, choose and explore books so they build further on their early literacy skills.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the children and how the childminder interacted with them. The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder and discussed how the childminder reviews the quality of teaching. The inspector viewed a sample of documents, including children's learning records. The inspector held discussions with the childminder at appropriate times. The inspector took account of the views of parents and children.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder is ambitious and plans effectively to promote children's achievement. She evaluates her teaching practice effectively and extends her knowledge and skills, for instance, by sharing good practice ideas with other childminders. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands how to identify and refer any concerns for children's welfare and prevent them from being drawn towards extreme views. She completes regular risk assessments to identify and minimise any hazards and she supervises children well during activities to ensure their safety. The childminder shares information regularly with parents and works closely with them to plan the next steps in children's learning. Children benefit from a shared approach to their learning.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder makes good use of regular opportunities, such as children's play, to help children extend their communication and language skills. For example, she describes what they do and helps them understand the meaning of words, such as 'open' and 'close'. The childminder plans well to support children's curiosity to explore natural materials. For instance, children pour sand through a spout and curiously observe how it causes the wheel at the bottom to turn. Overall, children build on their understanding of the world. The childminder has good knowledge and understanding of how different groups of children learn at various stages of their development. Planning is accurate yet flexible, to take account of individual children's interests. For example, the childminder adapts a threading activity effectively to support children's emerging interest in shaking objects in the container and listening to the sounds. Children enjoy their learning experiences.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder is a positive role model. She respects children's views and uses polite language in her interactions with them. She is fair and consistent in her expectations for their behaviour. Children feel valued, build good social skills and learn to distinguish between right and wrong. The childminder praises children for their perseverance and encourages them to 'keep trying'. Children build confidence and a positive sense of their own abilities. They feel motivated to try new and challenging activities. Children benefit from regular opportunities to play in the fresh air. The childminder works in close partnerships with parents to provide nutritious and balanced meals for children. These arrangements help to support children's good health and well-being.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Young children use their imagination well to replay their observations of the real world. For example, they pretend to feed baby dolls and cuddle them. All children gain useful skills for their future learning. For instance, they learn to concentrate and focus well as they build a tower with spindles. They develop as curious learners and make good progress from their starting points.
