This provision is good
The childminder provides a cosy, safe and stimulating environment in which children enthusiastically play. Children of all ages are confident to explore and find things out for themselves. Children are happy and settled. They have warm, affectionate relationships with the childminder, who knows them well and is attentive to their individual needs. The childminder monitors children's progress closely and makes accurate assessments of their development. She quickly identifies children's next steps in learning and current interests, and plans activities to help them progress further. Children eagerly join in with activities and make good progress in their learning from their starting points. The childminder shares information about children's care and learning with parents, using a variety of methods. She actively involves parents in their children's learning from the start. Parents comment that they are pleased with the care their children
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not make the most of all opportunities to extend children's thinking skills, to consistently extend their learning to the highest levels. Although the childminder uses self-evaluation appropriately to help develop her practice, it is not as clear as possible about identifying precise targets that particularly benefit children's learning.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder's teaching and interaction with the children, and the impact this has on the children's learning. The inspector checked documents, including the childminder's suitability and training certificates. The inspector discussed children's individual learning and development with the childminder. The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her self-evaluation processes. The inspector sampled the childminder's policies and procedures, including those relating to safeguarding.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her role in protecting children. She is clear about the procedures to follow if she has any child protection concerns. The childminder completes daily risk assessments to identify and minimise all hazards to children. She regularly completes training to update her knowledge. For example, recent training with a co-childminder has helped her to understand how to plan effective activities to help children's speech and language development. The childminder works closely with other childminders to share ideas and suggestions. She has established positive relationships with early years professionals and other settings that children attend, to consistently support children's learning and development.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder interacts positively with children. She gets down to their level and supports them as they play. The childminder supports young children's language development. For example, she describes their different hair colour or clothes they are wearing to build their vocabulary. The childminder encourages children to count and recognise numbers as they play. This helps children to build on their early mathematical development. The childminder is well organised and manages the space and resources successfully, to enable children to freely make choices in their play. For example, she adds play tunnels as children enjoy pretending to be dinosaurs looking for places to hide. Children are confident and they also lead their own play. They enjoy using blocks to build pyramids of different sizes using words, such as 'smaller' and 'bigger'.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children behave well. The childminder is a good role model for children and has clear expectations of their behaviour. Children respond positively to her guidance and support. They help to tidy away toys and resources when their play finishes and are familiar with expectations and routines. Children learn to adopt healthy lifestyles. They confidently learn to manage their own personal hygiene routines. The childminder makes good use of local playgroups where children meet other adults and children. Children frequently learn about different cultures and celebrations, and about people in the community who may be different to them. The childminder offers plenty of opportunities for children to play with energy and vigour, such as during exercise sessions. This contributes towards children's growing confidence in their abilities.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children gain good early literacy and mathematical skills, in readiness for their future learning, such as starting school. They are inquisitive, show curiosity and are willing to have a go. Children display good concentration and involvement in activities. They learn about colours, numbers and shapes through activities and routines. For example, children successfully count the days of the month from one to 13 during circle time and try to make a bagel at snack time into a crescent shape, their 'shape of the week'.
