Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector spoke with childminder, her assistant and the children during the inspection. The inspector jointly observed children's learning and discussed their progress. The inspector spoke with a parent and took account of their written views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of her responsibilities to protect children from harm. She is vigilant in identifying and reporting any concerns that may affect the safety of the children. The childminder takes effective steps to provide a very safe and secure environment for children to play and learn. Recent enhancements to her garden have led to an increase in children's motivation to learn outside. The childminder monitors the work of her assistant closely and ensures she has up-to-date knowledge of the policies and procedures. She provides opportunities for parents to share children's learning from home, such as through an 'achievement tree'.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder promotes children's understanding of number effectively as she incorporates counting and mathematical language into everyday activities. For example, children measure out ingredients as they follow the steps of a recipe. They are supported to count out how many spoonfuls they need for their mixture, with older children challenged further as they work out simple calculations, such one 'more' or one 'less'. The childminder builds very effectively on children's interests outside. For example, children expertly learn how turn on a tap attached to a water container and enjoy pouring water from one container to another. The childminder supports children's communication and language development well to help them to become confident talkers.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding
Children are very settled and happy in this welcoming home-from-home environment where they develop exceptionally positive attitudes to learning. The childminder and her assistant effectively help children to develop their confidence in social situations and children quickly learn to take turns and share resources. Children relish being outside and rapidly develop confidence in their physical skills. For example, they jump in and out of puddles and competently handle tools, such as spades as they tend to the plants. Children enjoy highly nutritious and varied homemade meals each day. They listen well to instructions and develop high levels of independence, for example, as they cut up mushrooms for their spaghetti lunch. Children learn about the wider world through a broad range of outdoor activities. They thoroughly enjoy visits to local parks, music groups and nature centres.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are motivated learners who quickly become absorbed in activities, particularly when they play outside. They show excellent levels of self-esteem, make choices for themselves and work together very effectively as part of a team. Children follow instructions well. They use technology confidently, such as requesting a favourite tune on a voice-activated device and dancing to the music. All children, including those who have special educational needs and/or disabilities, are working comfortably within the range of development typical for their age. Children develop the key skills in readiness for their move on to school.
