This provision is good

 Children are confident and happy and develop good self-esteem. They enjoy the challenge of taking ownership of their own learning.  The childminder teaches children well and prepares activities that cater for their individual interests.  The childminder forms good relationships with the children, helping to give them the emotional support they need to learn.  Strong links have been formed with parents and local schools. This helps to provide a safe and secure foundation for children's learning.  The childminder's knowledge and monitoring of children's progress ensures they are developing skills to build on in readiness for school.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently make the best use of opportunities for children to learn about others who are different to themselves.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to learn about others who are different to themselves to enhance their understanding of the wider world even further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder.  The inspector conducted a joint observation of a planned activity with the childminder and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector observed the teaching and care practices of the childminder.  The inspector viewed relevant documentation, including evidence of training and the suitability of the childminder to work with children.  The inspector read comments from parents regarding the care and education of their children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has conducted a thorough self-evaluation and knows her strengths and areas for development. This helps her to make changes to improve the quality of her setting. The childminder attends training whenever she can. This helps to broaden her knowledge of early years and improve her practice. The childminder works hard to form a calm and happy atmosphere. The setting is clean, bright and well resourced. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has attended rigorous safeguarding training and knows the procedures to follow to keep children safe from harm.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder plans activities well so they cater for all age ranges and the individual needs of each child. She supports children's communication and language development well by demonstrating, questioning and providing a narrative during their play. The childminder skilfully uses other methods, such as arts and crafts, to teach children about mathematics and develop their fine-motor skills. The children learn to recognise shapes and colours and how to cut and stick while making their own space rockets. They also learn to recognise shapes and use new language as they take part in a shape hunt around the setting. The children express their delight as they find and recognise each shape. Assessment of children's progress is thorough. This helps the childminder to pick up on any gaps in learning, close them quickly and seek intervention where necessary.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has worked hard to create a bright, welcoming and secure environment for children. They enjoy a range of healthy snacks and meals, such as fruit, yoghurt and spaghetti bolognese. Children drink sugar-free juice and have access to fresh drinking water throughout the day. They enjoy regular exercise and develop their physical skills. They walk to and from school, play and have picnics in the park, and attend the local play centre, helping them to become familiar with their local community. Children also regularly mix with children that attend other childminding settings, to help them make new friends. Children's behaviour is good, mainly as a result of the way the childminder skilfully engages them in an interesting range of activities.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points in all areas of learning. The secure relationship they have with the childminder helps them to settle quickly, gain confidence and develop a range of social skills. Children are well prepared for the next stage of their learning and their eventual move on to school.
