This provision is good

 The childminder uses her experience and good knowledge of child development to help her to provide children with a wide range of age-appropriate resources and activities. She takes children to a number of local groups to help expand their experiences and promote their confidence in different social situations.  Children are happy and well settled in the childminder's care. They make their own choices about what they would like to play with and enjoy singing their favourite songs and rhymes. Children respond well to the childminder's playful and engaging manner.  Parents are very complimentary about the childminder. They praise her warm and friendly, but highly professional, approach and offer comments such as 'the care she provides exceeds my expectations as a parent'.  The childminder uses calm and consistent strategies to help children learn what is expected of them. She reminds children to share and to consider the feelings of others.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently provide parents with specific guidance and advice about how they can extend their child's learning at home.  Sometimes, the childminder's teaching is not precisely focused on what individual children need to learn next to promote their more rapid progress.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide parents with more specific guidance on how they can help support and extend their children's learning at home  plan more precisely for what children need to learn next to promote their more rapid progress.

p.2

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact on children's learning.  The inspector evaluated the success of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of parents' written comments.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is alert to the signs and symptoms that a child may be at risk of harm. She is confident about the action to take if she has any child protection concerns. The childminder reviews her practice to help her identify some areas for improvement. She has devised her own pictorial guide and song to help children learn how to wash their hands thoroughly. The childminder uses online forums and meets up with other childminders to help her keep her knowledge and skills up to date. She shares information with other settings children attend to support their learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder monitors children's progress and accurately assesses their stage of development. She responds well to children's different personalities and adapts her interactions dependent upon their ages and capabilities. She encourages children to complete jigsaw puzzles, asking them questions about the pictures to encourage them to concentrate. Older children proudly demonstrate their knowledge of parts of the body using actions, such as squeezing their hands together to show how a heart beats. The childminder talks to children about what they are doing to help extend their developing vocabulary. Children enjoy exploring different textures, such as flour. The childminder introduces new words, such as 'fluffy', to encourage them to describe how it feels.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder follows well-established routines to help children become settled and self- assured in her care. She is careful to follow parents' wishes regarding their children's care. The childminder is very calm and sensitive in her interactions and is very alert to children's individual needs, such as when they are tired and need a sleep. She helps young children develop their self-care skills, such as feeding themselves and drinking from a cup. Children enjoy playing in the fresh air in the childminder's garden. They are confident to demonstrate their skills on the climbing frame and are eager to play with the interesting selection of ride-on toys.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are developing the key skills to support their move on to pre-school. They proudly sing their favourite songs and rhymes and listen with interest to stories. Older children are confident to ask questions. They use their imagination as they play with small-world figures, describing what the different people are doing. Younger children explore cause- and-effect toys and enjoy moving their bodies to the musical sounds they create.
