This provision is good
The childminder communicates well with parents and supports them in extending their children's learning. For example, she lends resources and uses regular newsletters to offer ideas for simple, practical activities to try at home. The childminder uses her qualification well to inform her work and puts any new knowledge from training into practice. She now further aids children's communication skills through games that support children in sounding out letters and words. Careful monitoring of children's progress enables the childminder to note and quickly address any gaps in their learning. She now offers older children additional opportunities that support them in using their mathematical skills in everyday situations. The childminder uses her practical assessments of children's progress to inform the planning of activities that interest and enthuse them. Children make good progress, gaining new knowledge and skills as they interact and participate in activities.

This provision is good
Children develop a meaningful awareness of diversity and learn to understand and respect differences. For example, they enjoy discussions and activities that help them to note their different features, interests and strengths.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not consistently offer as many outdoor learning opportunities to extend fully the development of children who prefer to learn in this environment.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

extend the use of outdoor areas to offer children who prefer to learn outside further play and learning opportunities.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector talked with children and the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection. She discussed activities with the childminder and reviewed one of these with her. The inspector looked at evidence of the suitability of household members. She discussed the childminder's self-evaluation and viewed a range of other documentation, including the safeguarding procedures. The inspector spoke to a small number of parents and took account of their views. She also viewed written feedback from parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder builds a good knowledge of this area by completing training and reading relevant documentation. She is aware of possible threats to children's welfare and understands how to report any concerns. The childminder ensures that children are always effectively supervised and that accidents and incidents are recorded and reviewed, further promoting children's well-being. The childminder reviews her practice and implements pertinent changes. Improvements to the assessment procedures enable the childminder to better understand each child's development and plan relevant activities to promote this. The childminder works well in partnership with other settings that children attend. For example, she offers children activities that help them to build on what they have been learning at pre-school.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder gently reinforces children's learning. For example, younger children play with toy animals. The childminder then introduces an associated book and the children giggle as they make the animal noises. Children participate in activities that encourage their enjoyment of books and support them in developing their communication skills. They describe picture cards relating to a favourite book. They then put these in order as they re-tell the story. The childminder ensures that children can easily access resources. This is one of the ways in which she encourages them to determine their own play and learning and to develop their skills in exploring. For example, children choose to play with a tray of coloured rice. They become absorbed in this activity as they use scoops and jugs to pour the rice, and eagerly use magnifying glasses to examine it in detail.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder obtains thorough initial information from parents about their child's needs and uses this to help children settle. She continues this good communication with parents, ensuring that children's care is always appropriate. The childminder uses effective strategies to manage children's behaviour, working in partnership with parents to ensure a consistent approach. She sets a good example and offers children practical explanations about their behaviour. They learn to manage this, showing care and respect for one another. The childminder praises children's efforts, helping to build their confidence and positive attitudes. Children develop a good understanding of healthy practices. For example, they competently explain how exercise affects them. Children show a thorough awareness of safety issues. Older children play carefully near the younger ones and understand why it is important to keep smaller toys out of their reach.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children make good progress and develop essential skills that support their learning and prepare them for school. Children enjoy many opportunities to review their activities and discuss their learning. For example, they enjoy looking at photographs of their past activities. They eagerly describe these and listen well to one another.
