p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder establishes effective relationships with parents and other settings that children attend to complement their learning well.  Children enjoy sensory play. They mix materials together with their hands, observing the changing texture. Young children grab handfuls and are curious as it slips between their fingers.  The childminder helps older children to understand about younger children and their development. This helps to create a harmonious environment where all children are considerate of each other.  Children make good progress in their learning and development. The childminder makes careful observations of children's learning and accurately assesses their development.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always organise the setting with best effect. At times, the toys on the floor hinder children's free flow around the setting.  At times, the childminder does not explain to older children why there are rules in place. For example, they open the zip on the safety netting around the trampoline so younger children can climb on.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 review and improve the organisation of some aspects of the environment to create a more ordered environment  encourage older children to consider more closely why there are rules in place, particularly when they play on the trampoline.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. She spoke to the childminder and children throughout the inspection.  The inspector discussed a planned activity with the childminder.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder at suitable times. She looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of the suitability of the childminder and household members.  The inspector read and took account of the written feedback provided by parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is aware how to keep children safe in her care. She undertakes regular training to refresh her knowledge of child protection issues. She is aware of the work of her local safeguarding children board and how to report any concerns about children's welfare to them. The childminder is reflective in her work. She works closely with the local authority to identify areas for development and to make improvements. The childminder reviews her setting and is planning further training to increase the quality of her teaching even further.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder makes story times lively and engaging occasions. Children point out things they recognise in illustrations and talk about the story as they gain a love of books. Children enjoy handling unusual musical instruments from different parts of the world. These intrigue children, who quickly work out how to make different sounds with them. Rhymes and songs support children in developing communication and language skills. They increase in confidence as they make up different words for rhymes and sing them to others. Children join in all together with the childminder. They sing loudly and take turns to choose their favourite song.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder encourages children to make choices as they play. She asks them how they can improve their activities and finds them further resources. The childminder knows children and their families well. She is sensitive to children's home circumstances that might affect their routines and is flexible and accommodating to ensure their needs are met. Children form close attachments to the childminder. When young children wake from sleeping, they cuddle into the childminder's shoulder as she carries them. Older children are independent in meeting their own personal needs. The childminder gives them confidence to do things for themselves, such as getting dressed to go outside.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children behave well. They show high levels of concentration and interest in activities. Children are sociable and aware of the similarities and differences between themselves and others. They recall past experiences, such as holidays and outings they have been on and talk about people who are important to them. Children are confident talkers who can make themselves easily understood. Children who speak English as an additional language make particular gains in their communication and language skills. All children make good progress and are well prepared for moving on to school.
