p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not consistently ensure that she has obtained written permission from parents and/or carers to administer medication.  At times, the childminder does not help to extend children's knowledge of colour and shape.  The childminder does not obtain precise information from parents about their child's learning at home prior to starting at her setting.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children form good attachments with the childminder. Their needs are met well because the childminder is sensitive to their individual personalities and capabilities.  Children are happy and confident to play and explore, and they have access to a safe environment.  The childminder has a reflective approach and continues to adapt her practice to support individual children and their families. She identifies appropriate plans for the future development of her service.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 strengthen teaching strategies to consistently promote children's understanding of colour and shape  gather more detailed information from parents about what a child already knows and can do when they first start at the setting.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not gain prior written permission from parents and /or carers to administer medication to children. However, she does obtain verbal permission. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has attended training and understands the signs and indicators that may alert her to concerns about a child's welfare. She understands her role to report any concerns she may have with regard to a child's welfare. The childminder undertakes regular risk assessment checks to maintain a safe environment for children to play in. She has a positive relationship with parents. She shares regular updates regarding children's progress to encourage learning at home.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes children and makes accurate assessments about their learning. She uses knowledge gained through ongoing observation, to plan appropriately challenging activities to support children's progress and development. The childminder is effective at promoting children's communication and language development. She responds appropriately to young children's babbles and early conversations, helping to develop their vocabulary skills. She supports children's ability to handle objects as they help the childminder water the strawberry plants in the garden. In addition, the children learn about how things change over time.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder speaks to parents to find out about children's care needs to help maintain their routines, so they feel secure. Consistent boundaries are in place for children's behaviour. The childminder supports the children to learn right from wrong. The childminder provides praise and recognises children's efforts and achievements. This enables children to develop their sense of self-esteem. Children have daily opportunities to access the outdoors as they use local parks, visit the library and have free access to the childminder's garden. They enjoy mealtimes and the childminder works closely with parents to ensure that foods offered support their health.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are motivated and eager to learn. They actively engage in a range of activities available. Children make good rates of progress and are working comfortably within the expected levels for their age. Children have good opportunities to develop their interest in the world around them. For example, the go on walks to the park to practise their physical skills as well as learn about their local community. They are learning key skills in readiness for their future learning and their eventual move on to nursery and school.
