This provision is good

 The childminder takes good steps to evaluate the quality of her provision. She makes links with other practitioners to help develop her service and make improvements.  The childminder builds strong relationships with children. She takes time to support children as they move into her setting and works well with parents to provide reassurance. This helps to support children’s emotional well-being.  The childminder plans activities based on what children know and can do. She uses her observations of their learning to plan realistic and challenging next steps for children. This helps children to make good progress in their learning.  The childminder identifies and completes a range of training to develop her knowledge and skills. For example, a ‘ready for school’ course has helped her to plan for children’s transitions to school.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make the best use of opportunities to enable children to use and develop their home language in their play.  The childminder’s communication with parents and the schools that children attend does not lead to a regular two-way flow of information about all children’s experiences so that continuity of care and learning is fully supported.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance the opportunities available for children to recognise or use their home language in their play and learning  extend the information shared with parents and schools that children attend, to further support continuity of care and learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of interactions between the childminder and children, and assessed the impact of these on children's learning.  The inspector jointly observed and discussed a children's activity with the childminder.  The inspector reviewed a range of documents, including policies and procedures, evidence of professional development and children's registers.  The inspector viewed the areas of the childminder's home used by children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands the potential risks posed to children and knows to whom to report concerns about children's welfare, should the need arise. The childminder seeks support and advice from advisers and other childcare practitioners to develop her service. For example, she considers how to develop more formal observations and assessments of children in order to enhance her evaluation of children's learning. The childminder seeks regular professional development opportunities to keep her knowledge up to date and improve her teaching practice. This contributes to the good progress made by children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder plans effectively, using children's interests and her observations of children's learning. She supports children to develop good mathematical awareness and extends their learning during activities. For example, she counts with children as they play with cars and goes on to encourage them to identify colours and name vehicles. The childminder helps children to develop early writing skills, such as when they use paintbrushes with increasing control to make marks on paper. The childminder uses resources in her local community well to enhance children's learning experiences. For example, she helps children develop an interest in books through regular visits to the nearby library.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder develops close bonds with children. They respond to her instructions well and seek her out for reassurance when in the presence of unfamiliar adults. Children develop increasing independence, for instance, as they spontaneously clean the floor after painting activities. The childminder provides opportunities for children to develop good social skills. For example, they interact with other children as they visit a local playgroup. The childminder conducts visual risk assessments and assesses possible hazards while on trips or outings with children. This helps to assure children's welfare and safety.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children gain the skills that they need to make good progress in their learning. Young children count to five and beyond as they play. They name colours and demonstrate their developing vocabulary, such as when repeating new words. They show excitement as they splash and explore water play. They confidently access resources and make choices in their play. Children are well prepared for their next stage in learning.
