This provision is good

 The childminder works in partnership with other professionals and gathers relevant information from parents to provide good-quality, inclusive learning experiences to all children.  The childminder has a really strong interest in the early years. He seeks out a range of opportunities to develop his professional knowledge and networks with other professionals to improve his practice further.  Relationships with parents and children are very strong. Parents feel that the childminder's communication is superb and are extremely satisfied with the care and teaching that their children receive. Children settle with the childminder quickly and show that they are comfortable in his care.  Children make good progress with the childminder. He works well with his co- childminder to monitor progress regularly and accurately, and assess the children's development to ensure that any gaps in their learning are minimised.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder provides a good range of opportunities for children to explore their ideas. However, he does not routinely make best use of these experiences to encourage children's creative thoughts even further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make the most of existing opportunities for children to process their thoughts and extend their ideas further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The childminder provided the inspector with a tour of the house and the inspector considered how suitable the property was for childminding.  The childminder and inspector discussed an activity and considered the impact of the teaching.  The inspector considered the views of parents through conversations with them and reading letters provided.  The inspector spoke to the childminder, his co-childminder and children at appropriate points during the inspection.  The inspector looked at a number of documents, including qualifications, children's learning journals and policies.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a strong understanding of how to keep children safe and knows whom to inform if he has concerns regarding their welfare. The childminder enthusiastically expands on the knowledge and skills he gained from his qualification. He liaises with professionals at other settings the children attend to share information and help him provide relevant learning opportunities. He reviews how his provision supports children's development and discusses with his co- childminder how they can enhance their practice further.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Regular observations of the children's development by the childminder help him identify appropriate next steps to be set for their learning. The childminder consults with the parents when children start, to find out what they can do already. A wide range of engaging activities is provided and children's interests are taken into consideration. For example, younger children jump up and down as they join in with the actions to their favourite songs. The childminder supports younger children's emerging language and uses simple words relating to their experiences, for example, pointing to a child's head and using the word 'head'.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder supports children's emotional development well. He interacts with younger children in a calm and responsive manner. He interacts positively with young children at mealtimes and supports their growing independence well. For example, he skilfully encourages them to use spoons to feed themselves. The childminder encourages children's social interaction with the wider community and they have regular outings to playgroups and the local park. Children's work is celebrated and their creations are displayed in the childminder's home.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are well prepared for the next stage in their learning. A range of ride-on toys in the garden helps children develop their large muscles. Younger children investigate using their senses, such as exploring the texture of small feathers in a 'sensory box'. Older children enjoy using a series of wooden stepping stones in the garden to help develop their number and colour recognition. Children learn about where healthy food comes from. They watch strawberries and raspberries grow in the garden and enjoy trying them when they are ready to eat. Children develop their imagination, for example, when pretending to cook in the sand 'kitchen' in the garden. They enthusiastically choose books from the wide selection on offer to help develop their early literacy skills.
