Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not have sufficient knowledge of the wider safeguarding issues, such as those relating to the 'Prevent' duty guidance. She does not have a secure knowledge of the possible signs of children and families being exposed to extreme views and behaviours and the procedure to follow.  The childminder does not always exchange information with other nurseries that children attend, to enable effective continuity of care and learning.  At times, children are unable to follow their curiosity and current interests when selecting toys, due to the difficulty in accessing some of them.  The childminder's evaluation of her practice, including her ongoing programme for professional development, has not helped maintain her previous good judgement.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children develop a close bond with the childminder and her assistant. They show they feel secure and this strengthens the children's self-confidence and well-being.  The childminder uses observations and assessment to track and monitor children's progress and plan activities to help develop their learning. Children make some progress from their individual starting points.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

 improve the exchange of information with other settings that children attend, to ensure children are appropriately challenged in their learning 01/06/2018

p.2

Due Date

 develop a secure knowledge and understanding of the 'Prevent' duty guidance and procedures. 15/06/2018

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 increase the accessibility of resources to allow children more opportunities to make choices and follow their own interests and curiosity  strengthen self-evaluation to help identify improvements, support continuous professional development and to keep updated with the latest practice guidance.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and the quality of the childminder's interactions with the children.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including risk assessments, key policies and procedures, and children's records.  The inspector had a tour of all parts of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector spoke to the childminder, assistant and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector discussed the childminder's self-evaluation and plans for her practice.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not have a fully secure knowledge of all the latest safeguarding legislation, particularly for the 'Prevent' duty. However, she knows the procedures she must follow should she have a concern about a child's welfare in her care. The childminder completes regular risk assessments to ensure all areas that children access are safe and secure. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder does not ensure that she reflects in sufficient depth to identify her continuous professional development needs. She does not exchange information with other nurseries that children attend when she does not collect them directly. This means there is not a good exchange of information about children's progress and daily activities. Partnerships with parents are strong. They receive information about their child's activities and how the childminder cares for their children, and were very positive about the care that she provides. The childminder works with an

assistant and they regularly discuss children's welfare and learning needs, and support for his practice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder collects information from parents when children first start, to find out what children enjoy and can do. She observes children's play and uses this information to understand each child's level of development. However, the childminder does not consistently use this information to plan appropriately challenging activities for each child's level of development. The childminder monitors the children's progress to assess for any gaps in their learning, and she discusses these with parents to help encourage the children's home learning. The childminder follows the children's lead, allowing them to decide on the type of play, such as whether to play indoors or outdoors.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Although the childminder has a range of resources and toys, these are not easily accessible to the children. This interrupts their curiosity and hinders them in developing new interests. The children behave well and respond positively to requests from the childminder. She encourages them to take turns as they play together making tea in the role-play kitchen. Young children use good manners and say 'ta' initially when given an object. This promotes their personal, social and emotional development well, and introduces them to positive social skills. Children enjoy developing their physical skills, for example, as they play on the climbing frame in the garden.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children make limited progress from their individual starting points in learning due to inconsistent teaching. They show they feel secure and are confident and enjoy learning. Children develop some skills in preparation for pre-school and school, for example, as they develop an interest in and select their favourite book, turn the pages and look at the pictures. They develop their small muscles, for instance, as they move objects from one hand to another in the sand tray.
