This provision is good
The childminder knows children well. She assesses their development and uses the information to plan what children need to learn next. Overall, children make good progress in their learning. The childminder is kind and caring. She forms strong relationships with children and attends to their needs promptly. Children thoroughly enjoy their time with the childminder and demonstrate good levels of self-esteem. Children have plenty of opportunity to become independent. The childminder routinely encourages them to take responsibility for their own needs, such as helping to set up their own activities, tidy away their resources when finished and to dress themselves. The childminder is reflective of her practice and continually reviews the service she provides to children and families. Together with her assistant the childminder reorganised the space to provide more opportunities for children of differing ages to

complete activities and monitors the impact this has on children's play.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder has not yet established a highly focused programme of professional development to drive forward future improvements to raise the quality of the provision. Sometimes the childminder misses opportunities during children's play to extend and build on their investigation skills.

Inspection activities
The inspector had a tour of the areas used for childminding. The inspector observed the quality of teaching and the impact on children's progress. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children throughout the inspection. The inspector completed a joint observation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector looked at documentation and records, including evidence of the suitability of adults within the home. The inspector took account of parents' comments.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant understand their responsibility to protect the welfare of children. She supervises children well. The childminder ensures she has a good understanding of safeguarding procedures. She knows the appropriate action to take should she have any concerns about a child's welfare. Effective supervision and coaching are provided to continually develop the assistant's knowledge and skills. The childminder shares her policies and procedures with parents, which provides them with the reassurance that their children are safe and well cared for. Parents comment positively on the quality of care and learning their children receive.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children have lots of fun and show their understanding of the world around them during imaginary play. For example, they pretend to make a volcano and talk about how it erupts. The childminder follows children's interests well, such as when they enquire about a sound in the environment. This develops into a conversation, which helps to support children's communication and language skills and their awareness of the natural world. The childminder uses her knowledge of the children's needs to plan interesting and challenging activities. Children's mathematical development is promoted well. For example, children enjoy counting balls to 10 and beyond. They skilfully match the numbers and place them in sequence in another game. They enjoy learning about colour and drawing pictures to work on their pencil control.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder supervises children well. She motivates them to practise their physical skills in enjoyable ways. For instance, she asks children to dance with the ribbons as they practise large and small movements. Children respond enthusiastically. The childminder is successful at talking to children about their surroundings and helps to raise their awareness of the world around them. Children learn to behave well. They show respect for others, take turns and share their toys. Children benefit from lots of meaningful praise and encouragement from the childminder, which supports their emotional well-being.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress and are well prepared for their next stage of learning and eventual move on to school. They engage well in their chosen play and with activities the childminder has planned for them. Children's literacy skills are strong. The childminder regularly shares books with them and they eagerly talk about what they can see happening in the pictures. Children develop good imaginations, pretending they are making dinner of soup and serving to the childminder. They play cooperatively and demonstrate how they learn to use good manners in appropriate ways.
