This provision is good
The childminder continually observes, assesses and plans for what children know, can do, are interested in and need to learn next. This contributes to the good progress children make. The childminder's positive interaction enhances toddler's interest and enjoyment. The childminder complements toys and activities with homemade resources that ignite toddler's natural curiosity and investigative nature. The childminder effectively promotes children's physical well-being and their understanding of practices that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. The childminder has a good knowledge of children in her care. She builds strong partnerships with parents to meet children's individual needs. As part of this, there is effective information sharing. Toddlers are happy and confident as they move around freely in a safe environment.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always maximise opportunities to develop older children's early literacy skills to support their future move to school to the highest level. The childminder does not provide enough opportunities that help children to learn about difference.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

enhance opportunities for older children to develop their early literacy skills, whether they have a preference for indoor or outdoor learning provide a greater range of opportunities for children to learn about the similarities and differences between themselves and others.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector spoke with children during the inspection. The inspector viewed written feedback from parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder refreshes her child protection training to ensure she has up-to-date knowledge. This is reflected in her secure understanding of possible signs of abuse and/or neglect. This includes where children may be vulnerable to extreme behaviours or views. The childminder effectively identifies and minimises hazards to promote children's welfare. Closed-circuit television, for instance, enhances security. The childminder uses a variety of sources of information to reflect on practice, keep abreast of changes and identify areas for development and relevant training.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder holds discussions with parents and other settings to promote a shared approach to children's learning. Toddlers actively explore their environment. They delight in examining the investigative tabletop activity the childminder has made. This provides toddlers with challenge as they practise their developing small-muscle skills, while investigating the fiddly and tricky mechanisms. They happily engage the childminder as they babble and attempt to communicate. The childminder positively responds to their attempts to speak, building on their early language skills. The childminder supports this further as she sings. Toddlers delight in joining in with actions to familiar songs.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder works in close consultation with parents in preparation for children settling in, to promote children's emotional well-being. She uses detailed 'All about me' documents, for instance, gathering information about children's uniqueness and what they know and can do on entry. Toddlers have clearly built close bonds with the childminder as they snuggle on her knee for a story. Toddlers are learning essential early social skills. They understand simple boundaries which the childminder gently reinforces, and say, 'Ta' in imitation of the childminder when given something. The childminder provides nutritional snacks and hearty homemade meals. Children also harvest a variety of vegetables in the garden, helping them to learn where healthy food comes from. Children's access to fresh air and exercise is complemented with a good variety of outings.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children progress well in their learning and, overall, are acquiring a variety of skills that are essential to future learning. Toddlers have a positive approach to learning new things and show good focus and perseverance while attempting to connect plastic blocks together. They show good levels of self-assurance and delight in finding a voice. They are very sociable with the childminder. Older children develop early mathematical concepts through interesting activities. For example, they grow sunflowers, monitor growth and compare their own height to these.
