The childminder maintains accurate and well-organised records that help to underpin effective practice and promote children's care and learning. Parents receive a copy of the childminder's policy manual, so they are well informed of procedures. The childminder teaches children well. She is skilled at engaging with children, encouraging conversations and providing clear explanations to support children's understanding. p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not consistently provide enough opportunities for children to make marks in a variety of ways to help to encourage their early writing skills. The childminder does not make the most of ongoing professional development opportunities to help to broaden her knowledge and skills and raise quality even higher.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector spoke to children during the inspection and took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder meets requirements well. She updates her knowledge of safeguarding issues, including how to keep children safe from being exposed to extremist views. She knows how to recognise and respond to child protection concerns. The childminder risk assesses her home thoroughly to help to ensure children's safety. She monitors children's progress well and evaluates her practice to help to identify areas that she wants to improve further. The childminder works well in partnership with parents and staff from other early years settings that children attend. This helps to promote consistency in children's care and learning.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder uses effective methods to accurately assess and track children's development. She offers a stimulating range of activities to keep children engaged and motivated to learn. The childminder encourages children to persist with tasks and find a different way to solve simple problems. She successfully engages children in conversations to help to promote their language skills. The childminder talks to children about other cultures and shares her knowledge of different languages, such as Welsh and French. This helps to promote children's awareness of the wider world. The childminder provides parents with a thorough summary of children's progress, including how she is supporting their next steps in learning. This gives parents ideas on how to complement children's learning at home.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children behave well. They use good manners and have good opportunities to learn about how to care for living things when they help to feed the childminder's guinea pig. Children show growing independence. They help to tidy away resources when they want to make more space to play. They manage their personal needs in the bathroom and they search for their own shoes when they want to play outside. The childminder promotes children's good health and reminds them how to keep safe. For example, she explains why they need to go down the slide and not up. Parents supply a packed lunch for children and the childminder offers healthy snacks and water to drink. Children enjoy being active outside and show good coordination when they play with the bat and ball.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children develop the skills they need to be ready for school. They enjoy their play and show sustained concentration during activities. Children work out how to fit together pieces of train track. They count with confidence and use mathematical language as they play. Children listen to stories with interest and enjoy lifting flaps and talking about what they see. Children who speak English as an additional language make very good progress in their communication and language development. They become confident communicators who express themselves well.
