Inspection activities
The inspector looked at necessary documentation, such as children's records, evidence of the suitability of adults living in the home, and some policies and procedures. The inspector spoke with the childminder and the children during the inspection. She looked at areas of the home used by the children and the resources available to them. The inspector observed the childminder and her interactions with the children. A specific activity was discussed to evaluate the quality of teaching and learning. The inspector took account of the views of parents through written testimonials and survey forms.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder has a professional approach to her work. She continually reflects on the service she provides and values the contributions that parents and children make in their feedback. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of the possible signs and symptoms of abuse. She knows who to contact if she has concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder has established effective partnerships with other providers, such as the local pre-school. This ensures a joined-up approach to children's learning. Parents are extremely pleased with the service provided by the childminder. They comment that the childminder provides 'detailed reports of children's progress' and that she has 'excellent bonds with children'.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children enjoy a wide range of activities provided by the childminder. Babies enjoy exploring a range of animal puppets. The childminder sings well-known nursery rhymes while they explore the animals. Babies jig along to the music and laugh when the childminder wiggles the puppets near their faces. The childminder knows the children she cares for well. She takes into account their development while she interacts and plays with them. For example, she gives babies who are learning to walk lots of opportunity to develop their physical skills. She ensures that there are conveniently placed pieces of furniture for them to hold on to as they cruise around the room.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are very happy and content in the childminder's care. They settle in quickly and build a secure bond with the childminder over time. Children are confident to 'have a go' at different tasks and activities. They receive plenty of praise and encouragement from the childminder which boosts their self-esteem and self-confidence greatly. The childminder takes children to a variety of toddler groups and parks in the local area. This helps to expand children's range of experiences and is a good opportunity for them to develop good social skills. The childminder provides a large and well-resourced outdoor area. Children have lots of fun playing in the mud kitchen and on large play equipment. The childminder promotes healthy eating. Children enjoy a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables for their snack.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their starting points in learning. Babies quickly learn new skills and communicate confidently. For example, they learn to say 'hiya' when picking up a toy phone and excitedly wave hello and goodbye when greeting visitors. Older children develop a range of skills which prepares them well for the move on to school. For example, they are learning to pull up their own zips and put on their own shoes.
