This provision is good

 The childminder has a secure understanding of children's individual needs, routines and interests. She observes them constantly and tracks their development to ensure there are no gaps in their learning. Children make good progress.  Children are happy and very well settled in the childminder's home. They seek her out during play and confidently go to her for comfort when they are tired.  Children behave well. They listen to instructions and understand what the childminder expects from them. She is a positive role model. For example, she praises and encourages children constantly. This helps develop their confidence and self-esteem.  The childminder successfully shares information with parents about their children's development and the learning opportunities she provides. For example, she sends home copies of children's next steps and talks to parents daily. This helps provide additional learning opportunities at home.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not gather information from parents about their children's learning at home, to better inform her planning process for continuous learning opportunities.  Occasionally, some equipment provided for younger children is not age appropriate and too challenging for them to benefit from.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 encourage parents to share information about what their children learn at home, to help better inform the planning process for continuous learning  ensure all equipment, including technological items, are age appropriate and achievable for children to use and understand.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the activities and childminder's interactions with children.  The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector viewed all areas of the home that children have access to.  The inspector viewed a range of written documentation, including policies, children's next steps, and training certificates.  The inspector viewed written feedback from parents to gain their views on the childminder and the service she provides.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder understands the importance of evaluating her practice and identifying ways to improve her practice. Since registering, she has kept her knowledge up to date and developed it within specific areas. For example, she has learned behaviour management techniques and how to sign to help support children with communication difficulties. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of the signs to be aware of and her role in protecting children from possible harm. She refreshes her knowledge of current procedures by completing courses and subscribing to early years websites. The childminder risk assesses her home daily and all outings that children take part in, for example, to the local parks and when using public transport.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder allows children to make independent decisions about their play and follows their interests. She promotes children's developing communication and language skills effectively. For example, for younger children, she narrates constantly but simply while they play, to enable them to hear lots of language and develop their knowledge. For slightly older children, she repeats keywords that they say and extends them. For example, 'yes, a pig, you have a pig, a pink pig.' Children concentrate well during play and enjoy trying out tasks for themselves. The childminder plans next steps for children using early years guidance, for example, to ensure they are making at least the expected progress for their age.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a warm and nurturing environment where children feel safe and secure. She works closely with parents initially, to help children settle and to gather information about their individual needs. She has an excellent knowledge of their routines. For example, she very quickly recognises signs of tiredness and hunger in younger children and sits quietly with them while they have their milk. Children develop strong attachments with the childminder. She teaches them good manners and the importance of sharing and taking turns during play. Children have regular opportunities to gain fresh air and exercise. They visit local parks, go for walks in the nearby town and explore the childminder's garden with her.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are making good progress in all areas of learning and development in preparation for future learning. They explore the environment with confidence and do so independently. Children enjoy challenge and have the confidence to persevere. For example, they concentrate for prolonged periods when completing jigsaw puzzles.
