Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Not applicable

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not display a certificate of registration on the premises, as required.  The childminder does not provide a wide enough range of stimulating experiences to consistently maintain young children's interest and does not interact effectively to encourage them in their play.  The childminder does not share with parents enough information about the support she offers to meet children's needs.  The childminder does not understand her responsibilities in the event of receiving a complaint and parents are not provided with information about how to contact Ofsted.  The childminder has not established effective self-evaluation systems to check the quality of her practice and ensure that she meets all requirements.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children are content and settled. The childminder builds good relationships with them and she cares for them well.  The childminder gives children opportunities to do things for themselves. Children learn to manage age-appropriate tasks independently.  The childminder knows how to keep children safe. She assesses risk effectively and ensures that young children do not have access to experiences that may cause harm.  The childminder promotes equality so that all children feel involved. She has a good understanding of how to help older children to understand about diversity.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

 implement a written statement of procedures to be followed in relation to complaints 20/05/2018

Due Date

 display the certificate of registration in the premises. 20/05/2018

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 provide a wide range of stimulating experiences and interactions that interest and engage young children  share with parents more information about support offered and how young children's needs are met  implement clear procedures in the event of a complaint being made and ensure that parents know how to contact Ofsted  develop effective systems for self-evaluation to identify priorities for future development and ensure all statutory requirements are met.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed experiences and assessed how well children's learning is complemented.  The inspector jointly evaluated an activity with the childminder.  The inspector spoke with some children and parents during the inspection and took account of their views.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation and checked the suitability of adults living at the premises.  The inspector held a meeting with the childminder and discussed self-evaluation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder lacks a thorough understanding of what constitutes good practice and self-evaluation is not effective. The childminder does not understand her responsibilities in the event of a complaint being made and does not display her certificate of registration. Parents are not kept suitably informed about how the childminder meets children's needs or how to contact Ofsted should they wish to do so. Despite this, parents comment that children are well cared for and the childminder offers a flexible service. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder knows sufficient information about child protection procedures. She has conducted her own research to update herself with new legislation to supplement her historic safeguarding training. She knows who to contact if she has a concern about a child's welfare. She is aware of the signs and symptoms of abuse and understands how to protect children from the risk of exposure to extreme

views. The childminder has undertaken recent paediatric first-aid training.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Younger children quickly lose interest. At other times when children are making their own choices in play, the childminder has a mostly supervisory role. Despite young children sometimes showing low levels of engagement, the childminder does not interact to encourage their play. Overall the childminder's support for children is variable. Children are warmly greeted by the childminder who asks about their day at school and talks about the week ahead. Children freely communicate with the childminder. On occasions, the childminder makes good attempts to include younger children in adult-initiated group experiences. For example, she entices them to plant onions and feed the chickens. She interacts with older children well, taking an interest and extending their learning. For example, she explains what chickens like and do not like to eat.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Although young children enjoy colouring pictures and playing on the slide, there are not enough experiences to maintain their interest. At times, young children wander around and show low levels of engagement. The childminder is good at monitoring older children's physical play to ensure that they safely manoeuvre around young children. However, she does not recognise that there are fewer stimulating experiences that meet the needs of younger children. This contributes to young children passively watching others rather than actively engaging in play. Children are calm and settled, showing that they feel emotionally secure in the childminder's care. Older children enjoy being more physically active with balls and scooters outdoors. The childminder reminds children about rules and boundaries. Children behave appropriately for their ages. They are independent in self-care tasks, such as toileting. The childminder encourages children to hydrate as

they play outside. She understands about providing a balanced menu of snacks to encourage their healthy development.
