This provision is good
The childminder has a welcoming and well-resourced setting that meets the needs of the different children who attend. Children have opportunities to play outside every day where they enjoy exploring the environment and developing their physical skills. Children quickly settle and develop strong attachments with the childminder. They go to her for reassurance when needed and the childminder demonstrates great sensitivity at these times. Parent's written testimonials confirm the good levels of care provided by the childminder. Parents praise the quality of activities that are planned for children. As children prepare to move on to school, the childminder takes them for visits and they meet the teaching staff. She shares relevant information with staff to ensure children's needs continue to be met when they start attending. The childminder helps children learn about and respect the similarities and differences

p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Although partnerships with parents are generally strong, the childminder does not consistently share all information she gathers about children's achievements. The childminder does not seek parents' views to help her evaluate the effectiveness of her setting.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with the children and the impact of her teaching on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector looked at policies and procedures to keep children safe and evidence of the suitability of the childminder to work with children. The inspector spoke to children present during the inspection. The inspector looked at written testimonials from parents to gain their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder demonstrates a good understanding of how to support children's learning. She monitors children's progress over time and knows where to seek support if she has any concerns about a child's development. The childminder researches current educational ideas and accesses training to develop her practice further. She includes children's ideas when she is planning and making improvements to her setting. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has robust policies and procedures in place to help keep children safe and well. She knows the signs that would cause her to be concerned about a child's welfare and how to respond to these. The childminder ensures that her home and garden are regularly checked for potential hazards. Children are well supervised when she takes them out on visits in the local area.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder gains useful information from parents as children start attending. She uses this information to plan resources and activities that will engage and interest children. She promotes children's mathematical development well. For example, she talks about the numbers in puzzles and names the different shapes as children draw. Children enjoy the childminder joining in with them as they play. As they create sounds with spoons and pans, the childminder asks them if they can make the sounds 'quiet' and 'loud'. Children show that they have listened by their appropriate responses. The childminder uses her observations of children as they play to identify their strengths and next steps in learning. She adapts her planning and introduces new resources to make sure children continue to make progress over time.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder is sensitive in meeting children's different personal needs. She works with parents to promote children's growing independence in managing their health and self- care skills. For example, children learn the importance of washing their hands at appropriate times. Children have good opportunities to make choices in their play. The childminder praises children's efforts which strongly supports their self-esteem and confidence. Children behave well and learn the importance of taking turns and sharing popular resources. The childminder provides a range of nutritious snacks during the day to encourage children in making healthy choices. Children enjoy being physically active and show determination when attempting new challenges, such as learning to use the slide in the garden. The childminder attends local groups to provide children with different experiences and to let them have opportunities to play with other children.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their starting points. They have high levels of curiosity and enjoy the challenge of learning new skills and words. They show much interest in the world around them and are confident to ask questions if they want to find out more information. They are well prepared as they move on to the next stage in their learning, including school.
